Job DescriptionOptometric Technicians assist optometrists in providing patient care, pre‑testing, post‑exam duties, specialty testing, and maintaining the doctor’s appointment schedule to ensure a professional and pleasant patient experience.
- Performs preliminary evaluation of patients before the OD exam, including dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, and Optomap.
- Conducts verbal interviews with patients prior to OD visits to determine medical issues and visit reasons, communicating findings to the OD.
- Enters patient information into the Electronic Health Records (EEHR).
- Assists ODs in caring for patients in a timely, effective manner, adhering to the scheduled appointment times.
- Instructs patients on prescribed medical care and schedules follow‑up appointments as needed.
- Discusses LASIK options with patients and identifies interested individuals by reviewing patient information forms.
- Schedules referral appointments with ophthalmologists, manages diagnostic follow‑up visits, and completes required paperwork.
- Records and maintains patient records/files in compliance with company, federal, and state policies (HIPAA).
- Handles patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, or problems, referring to the OD as necessary.
- Completes proper coding of procedures for payment collection.
- Performs diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera, etc.) when required.
- Corresponds with internal and external doctor offices regarding patient and insurance referrals.
- Supports the OD with patient education as instructed by the Optometrist.
- Documents medical findings and communications between doctor and patient in Electronic Medical Records and assists with related clerical duties.
- Participates in practice meetings and projects as requested.
- Ensures maximum OD utilization through appointment confirmation, recall management, and outreach partnership with the manager.
- Calls all no‑shows or cancelled patients to reschedule appointments.
- Conducts contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manages contact lens trial inventory.
- Completes end‑of‑day responsibilities, including opti‑schedule wrap‑up and end‑of‑day checklist.
- Makes recommendations for efficiencies and processes that deliver quality, cost savings, and/or profitability improvements within the Practice and/or organization.
- Performs other duties within the Practice as requested and as time allows.
- High School or GED qualification.
- Entry‑level PC skills (MS Office, Windows, Word Processing).
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a team environment, prioritizing team goals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills for professional collaboration with co‑workers and patients.
- Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications.
- Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment.
- Experience maintaining patients’ records/files per HIPAA regulations.
- Industry certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT) preferred but not required.
- Ability to communicate, exchange information, use necessary equipment, and move about the office.
