Job Summary

The Medical Assistant is a key component of our team that works closely with the primary care physician to deliver excellent patient care, ensuring services are provided within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines. Responsibilities include reviewing and updating health records, measuring vital signs, and preparing treatment rooms for upcoming examinations.

Essential Functions
  • Provides excellent customer service by greeting patients and the community in a respectful manner.
  • Prepares and reviews patient charts for upcoming visits by verifying that all diagnostic test results, hospital reports, and other medical records are correct and up to date.
  • Measures vital signs such as pulse rate, respiration, blood pressure, weight and height.
  • Performs departmental clerical duties such as checking inventory, stocking supplies, tracking referrals, and answering phones as needed.
  • Possesses the ability to troubleshoot and resolve problems promptly.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education
  • High School degree or GED.
Licensure / Certification
  • Medical Assisting certification from one of the following (required within 12 months of start date):
    • CMA – American Association of Medical Aprending
    • RMA – American Medical Technologists
    • CCMA – National Health career Association
    • NRCMA – National Association for Health Professionals
    • NCMA – National Center for Competency Testing
  • If the incumbent cannot obtain MA certification, an Assessment‑Based Recognition in Order Entry (A ‑OE) is acceptable (not accepted in the state of South Carolina).

BLS Basic Life Support, American Heart Association (required at hire for Roper St Francis Healthcare locations; preferred at hire, required prior to independent patient care at BSMH).

Experience
  • One year of medical assistant healthcare experience (preferred, not required).
  • Two years of clerical experience in a physician’s office (preferred, not required).
Skills & Abilities
  • Problem‑solving skills, basic computer skills, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Engages with staff and patients in a professional manner.
