Travel Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) – Level I Trauma Center in Springfield, IL

Join a high-acuity perioperative team as an experienced Operating Room Registered Nurse (OR RN) on a 13-week travel nursing contract in Springfield, Illinois. This opportunity is ideal for a confident travel nurse who enjoys complex surgical cases, collaborative care, and a fast-paced acute-care environment. Work in a Level I trauma center and Magnet facility while enjoying Springfield's welcoming community, cultural attractions, parks, museums, and convenient access to central Illinois amenities.

  • Assignment Length: 13 weeks, through February 22, 2027
  • Shift: 12-hour day shifts, 6:45 a.m.

    -7:15 p.m.;
    Friday-Monday weekend block
  • Call: Approximately once weekly
  • Orientation: 40 hours, including virtual at-home orientation on the first day
  • Department: 23 operating rooms serving adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
  • Charting: Cerner experience preferred
  • Scrubs: Provided
  • Parking: Complimentary parking permit available
  • Floating: Required within the nurse's scope of practice and facility needs
Operating Room RN

Job Requirements
  • Minimum 3 years of recent Operating Room Registered Nurse experience
  • Prior travel nursing experience required; first-time travelers are not accepted
  • Current Registered Nurse license in Illinois, active and in hand or in the application process
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross; RQI cards are not accepted
  • CNOR certification preferred or required according to specialty requirements
  • Level I trauma experience required
  • Strong general OR and trauma experience required; experience with all service lines except cardiovascular surgery
  • Demonstrated experience with general, bariatric, neurologic, orthopedic, plastic, transplant, urologic, and trauma procedures
  • Proficiency with laparoscopic-assisted cases, appendectomy, cholecystectomy, colon resection, hernia repair, mastectomy, thyroidectomy, Whipple procedures, craniotomy, cervical and lumbar fusion, laminectomy/discectomy, arthroscopy, fracture reduction, microvascular free flap procedures, organ donation, cystoscopy, nephrectomy, prostatectomy, amputations, and multi-injury trauma cases
  • Knowledge of code response, fire safety, latex allergy precautions, malignant hyperthermia response, radiation safety, infection control, blood product administration, specimen handling, urinary catheterization, and Universal Protocol/time-out procedures
  • Experience with electrosurgical units, fiber-optic light sources and cords, and Hana tables
  • OR RN candidates must reside at least 50 miles from the assignment location
Perioperative Nursing Responsibilities
  • Deliver safe, evidence-based perioperative nursing care to adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients
  • Support surgical teams across general, bariatric, neurologic, orthopedic, plastic, transplant, urologic, and trauma service lines
  • Prepare operating rooms, equipment, instrumentation, and supplies for scheduled and emergent procedures
  • Apply sterile technique, infection prevention practices, radiation safety standards, and latex allergy precautions
  • Participate in patient identification, surgical site verification, specimen labeling, and Universal Protocol/time-out procedures
  • Assist with complex trauma and emergency cases, including code response and malignant hyperthermia management
  • Administer blood products and provide appropriate perioperative monitoring and documentation
  • Collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia professionals, nursing colleagues, and interdisciplinary support teams to promote excellent surgical outcomes
  • Float within clinical scope when needed and participate in call coverage and required weekend scheduling
