Description
Leidos – Multi-Domain Solutions (MDS) Division •
Position:
Junior Level Mechanical Engineer
Leidos and its Multi-Domain Solutions (MDS) division are seeking a highly motivated Junior Mechanical Engineer to support the planning, design, and analysis of mechanical systems—primarily Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)—for mission-critical operations across government, commercial, and institutional facilities. This role offers the opportunity to work under the mentorship of senior engineers and contribute to system layout, equipment selection, energy modeling, and construction documentation.
The ideal candidate possesses a solid foundation in mechanical engineering principles, a passion for learning, and a commitment to delivering energy-efficient, reliable, and code-compliant designs.
- Assist in the design and layout of HVAC systems, including ductwork, piping, ventilation, and equipment selection for 24/7 mission-critical environments.
- Prepare, revise, and maintain construction drawings and specifications using AutoCAD, Revit MEP, or similar design software.
- Support mechanical system load calculations, energy modeling, and system sizing using tools such as Trace 700, HAP, or eQUEST.
- Participate in field surveys, site investigations, and facility condition assessments.
- Assist with commissioning, testing, and balancing of mechanical systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance.
- Review submittals, respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), and support construction administration activities.
- Ensure all designs and documentation adhere to applicable building codes and standards including ASHRAE, NFPA, IBC, IMC, and LEED.
- Maintain organized engineering documentation including reports, technical memos, and as-built drawings.
- Gain hands-on experience with Building Management Systems (BMS) for centralized control of HVAC, lighting, and life safety systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical, architectural, and structural disciplines.
- Active Top Secret SCI clearance required, with the ability to pass a polygraph.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- 2–4 years of relevant engineering experience with a Bachelor’s degree, or less than 2 years with a Master’s degree.
- Working knowledge of static and dynamic analysis techniques for mechanical systems and equipment.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Solid Works, AutoCAD) for mechanical design and drafting.
- Understanding of design specifications, dimensioning, and documentation standards.
- Experience supporting prototype fabrication, design testing, and feasibility studies.
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to communicate technical concepts clearly across multidisciplinary teams.
- Familiarity with mechanical engineering fundamentals such as thermal analysis, hardware design, and product development.
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills with keen attention to detail.
- Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Current Polygraph
- Experience with Solid Works Simulation, ANSYS, or other FEA/thermal analysis tools.
- Hands-on experience in prototyping and iterative product development.
- Proven ability to contribute independently to moderately complex engineering projects.
- Familiarity with project management tools and principles, particularly in product development environments.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes and design for manufacturability (DFM) best practices.
- Exposure to hardware design in regulated environments (e.g., aerospace, defense, medical).
