Software Virtualization Engineer

We are seeking a Software Virtualization Engineer to support a high-impact intelligence mission for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA). This role is for individuals who thrive in complex environments, enjoy solving challenging problems, and want their work to directly support national security.
As a Software Virtualization Engineer, you’ll help deliver secure, high-performance virtualized applications used by mission partners daily.
Key Responsibilities- Design, develop, and maintain virtualized application packages for mission baseline applications
- Support application delivery across VDI environments and thick clients
- Virtualize applications with plugins and advanced graphics requirements
- Partner with application testers and mission SMEs to validate functionality and performance
- Enhance application sequencing processes and incorporate required changes
- Identify and persist critical user settings (registry, App Data, etc.) in non-persistent VDI environments
- Identify and implement automation opportunities to streamline application sequencing
- Collaborate with virtualization and VDI teams on application delivery infrastructure
- Improve backup, disaster recovery, and continuity of operations
- Create and maintain technical artifacts, including: detailed designs; test plans and test cases; implementation and operational guides
- Work independently with sound technical judgment and ownership
- Troubleshoot and tune VMware software-defined data center environments
- Analyze, test, and apply security patches and software updates
- Resolve incidents and fulfill software requests
- Provide training and mentorship to team members
- Support additional mission needs as assigned
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of experience in Systems Administration or Virtualization
- 3+ years of experience with VDI technologies such as VMware Horizon, Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, Microsoft Remote Desktop Services
- 2+ years of experience with application virtualization technologies:
Citrix Xen App, Microsoft App-V, Flex App, App Volumes, or similar - Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent time management and organizational skills
- A proactive mindset and strong desire to learn and grow
- Experience with Windows 10/11 and Windows Server 2012+
- Scripting and automation experience (e.g.,
Power Shell
) - Familiarity with profile management solutions: VMware DEM, Liquid ware Profile Unity
- Working knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policy
- Understanding of load-balanced application delivery
- Familiarity with ITIL principles
- Experience creating architectural design documents and technical presentations
- Knowledge of enterprise architecture frameworks (e.g.,
TOGAF
) - Virtualization certifications such as VMware VCA-DCV
- Experience with ticketing systems (Service Now, Remedy, Service+, etc.)
- Travel: Occasional travel to customer sites in St. Louis, MO
- Telework: Not available – role requires access to classified customer networks
- Primary Locations: Springfield, VA
