Job Overview
Washington Gas is hiring Natural Gas Technicians to help maintain safe, reliable gas transportation across VA, MD, and DC. The role includes supporting crews with manual excavation and pneumatic tools, operating company vehicles, and working rotating shifts in a 24/7 operation. After training, technicians may be assigned to any station within the service area.

- Assist with emergency and priority situations to ensure safe and reliable service.
- Support lead personnel and senior employees in maintaining equipment.
- Retrieve tools and equipment needed for repairs.
- Adhere to Washington Gas Engineering & Operating standards and all company policies and procedures.
- Follow all Federal, State, and Local codes.
- Complete or verify all documents associated with each job.
- Ensure work is completed within the given timeframe.
- Maintain personal and job site safety at all times.
- Install and remove protective barriers such as shoring material.
- Follow proper excavation practices according to company standards.
- Load and unload required materials.
- Work in confined spaces and wear a respirator when required.
- Operate power tools, e.g., breakers, rammers, clay spades, drills, cutters, saws.
- Use hand excavation tools and follow procedures near other utilities.
- Assist with regular and scheduled maintenance: leak investigations, grading, detection, surveys, valve inspections, and minor leakage repairs.
- Read and interpret company records, including quad maps and map books.
- Communicate with customers and co‑workers electronically and in person.
- Represent Washington Gas professionally to maintain good customer relations.
- Order daily materials, secure and store them safely, dispose of debris, keep the vehicle clean, and follow guidelines for returning damaged material.
- Inspect, test, and document findings for company equipment such as CGI, fire extinguishers, PPE.
- Participate in related business support activities: storeroom cycle counts, audits, safety observations, vehicle clean‑outs, cross‑functional training.
- High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
- At least 6 months of experience in construction or mechanical trade (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, landscaping, automotive).
- Experience utilizing hand tools.
- Natural Gas experience preferred.
- Must pass a pre‑interview math and reading assessment administered by Washington Gas.
- Basic computer skills.
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Valid Driver’s License and meet company driving standards.
- Must acquire a Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) medical card within 6 months of hire.
- Must complete Flagging and Plastic Pipe Joint (PPJ) mechanical certifications, gas odor recognition testing, and respirator qualifications.
- Shift work required.
- Use of personal vehicle as required.
- CDL holders subject to testing under federal highway regulations.
