Washington Gas is hiring Natural Gas Technicians!
Join our team and help maintain safe, reliable gas transportation across VA, MD, and DC. In this role, you'll assist with maintaining gas facilities, support crews with manual excavation and pneumatic tools, and operate company vehicles. Work involves rotating shifts in a 24/7 operation, and after training, you may be assigned to any station within our service area.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist with emergency and priority situations to ensure safe and reliable service.
  • Support the lead person and senior employees to maintain equipment in working order.
  • Retrieve necessary tools and equipment to perform repairs.
Job Assignment Responsibilities
  • Adhere to Washington Gas Engineering & Operating standards and all company policies and procedures.
  • Follow all Federal, State, and Local codes.
  • Complete or verify all documents associated with each job.
  • Ensure work is completed within the given timeframe.
  • Maintain personal and job site safety at all times.
  • Install and remove protective barriers (such as shoring material).
  • Follow proper excavation practices according to company standards.
  • Load and unload required materials.
  • Work in confined spaces and wear a respirator when working in gaseous atmospheres or confined spaces.
Operate Power Tools as Needed
  • Breakers, rammers, clay spades, drills, cutters, saws, and other tools.
Excavate Company Facilities
  • Use hand excavation tools.
  • Follow proper procedures when excavating near or around other utilities.
Assist with Regular and Scheduled Maintenance
  • Leak investigations, grading, detection, and surveys.
  • Valve inspections and drip monitoring.
  • Tightening, adjusting, and repairing basic/minor leakage.
Interpret Company Records
  • Read and interpret company records, including quad maps and map books.
Communicate Effectively
  • Communicate with customers and co-workers electronically and in person.
  • Represent Washington Gas professionally to maintain good customer relations and company reputation.
Stock and Equip Company Vehicle
  • Order materials needed for daily activities.
  • Secure and store materials safely.
  • Dispose of excess debris properly.
  • Keep vehicle clean and orderly.
  • Follow guidelines for returning damaged material.
Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Inspect, test, and document findings for company equipment, including CGI, fire extinguishers, PPE, and more.
Additional Activities
  • May be assigned to related business support and administrative activities such as storeroom cycle counts and audits, peer safety observations, vehicle clean-outs, and cross‑functional training activities.
What We’re Looking For
  • High School diploma or equivalent. (G.E.D.)
  • At least 6 months of experience preferred in construction or mechanical trade such as HVAC, plumbing, electrical, welding, carpentry, landscaping, automotive industry.
  • Experience utilizing hand tools.
  • Natural Gas experience preferred.
  • Must pass a pre‑interview math and reading assessment administered by Washington Gas.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrate good verbal communication skills.

New hires at this level must successfully complete all assigned training modules, qualifying exams and field clearances, including Flagging and Plastic Pipe Joint (PPJ mechanical) certifications, gas odor recognition testing, and must successfully complete respirator qualifications to include all hygiene requirements needed to wear a tight‑fitting respirator.

Licenses/Certifications
  • Valid Driver’s License required. Must meet Company driving standards.
  • Must acquire Federal Motor Carrier (FMC) medical card within 6 months from date hired into the position.
  • CDL holders are subject to testing under federal highway regulations.
