Responsibilities Pipe Crew Foreman – Position ResponsibilitiesThe Pipe Crew Foreman is a working leader responsible for directing daily field operations for underground utility installation, including water, sewer, storm drain, and related infrastructure. This position requires a hands‑on foreman who leads by example
, is willing to work both inside and outside of equipment
, and ensures safe, high‑quality, and efficient production.
- Lead, supervise, and motivate a pipe crew to complete daily tasks safely, efficiently, and to spec.
- Perform hands‑on work, including pipe laying, grade checking, spotting, trench prep, shoring, backfill, and compaction.
- Operate heavy equipment as needed (excavators, loaders, skid steers, etc.) while maintaining strict safety and production standards.
- Coordinate daily work with the Project Manager, the Superintendent, and other onsite crews.
- Interpret plans, drawings, grade sheets, and project specifications; ensure installation meets all requirements.
- Maintain proper pipe grade, alignment, bedding, and compaction throughout the installation process.
- Conduct daily safety meetings and enforce all OSHA, company, and jobsite safety protocols.
- Manage crew productivity, set daily goals, and monitor progress to meet project timelines.
- Assist in planning daily activities, identifying material needs, and ensuring all tools/equipment are available and functioning.
- Communicate effectively with inspectors, engineers, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Complete daily reports, timesheets, quantities, and other required documentation accurately.
- Train and mentor crew members to improve skills, efficiency, and safety practices.
- Recognize potential issues (utility conflicts, unsuitable trench conditions, safety hazards, etc.) and proactively resolve them.
- Ensure the crew maintains professionalism, work ethic, and accountability at all times.
- Leads from the front—works hard, sets the pace, and maintains a positive attitude.
- Strong understanding of underground utilities, grades, and pipe installation methods.
- Skilled in both equipment operation and ground labor, willing to switch roles as needed.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to keep the crew organized and productive.
- Safety‑driven mindset with the ability to enforce rules while maintaining crew morale.
- Reliable, punctual, and committed to high‑quality workmanship.
- Experience building pump houses
, sewer lines
, and underground infrastructure - Proven ability to run crews
, coordinate subs, and manage daily operations - Strong understanding of project schedules
, safety standards, and quality control - A leader who brings out the best in their team and takes pride in delivering top‑notch work
