This role is for a Senior/Principal Mechanical Design Engineer in the UK water industry
, working for an engineering design consultancy based in St Albans
.
Location: St Albans (Hybrid working available by agreement)
Employment Type: Permanent or Contract (Outside IR35)
About the RoleOur client is an established engineering design consultancy delivering projects across the UK water, rail, and utilities sectors. They are seeking an experienced Senior or Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join their St Albans office.
This is primarily an office-based role with occasional site visits, with travel expenses reimbursed. Hybrid working is available when agreed in advance.
Key Responsibilities- Deliver mechanical design solutions that meet safety, quality, and project requirements.
- Produce mechanical design calculations, specifications, and drawings for water industry projects.
- Lead and mentor CAD technicians.
- Prepare scopes of work for subcontracted M&E design teams and review their deliverables.
- Liaise with equipment suppliers and manufacturers, prepare technical specifications, and evaluate tender submissions.
- Produce design reports, investigations, and technical specifications.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant industry standards, regulations, and company procedures.
- Manage and document design changes throughout the project lifecycle.
- Attend and present at client and project design meetings.
- 5–10 years' mechanical design experience within the UK water industry.
- Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution.
- Working towards Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.
- Good understanding of UK water industry design standards and practices.
- Experience with hydraulic design.
- Knowledge of electrical design and control systems.
- Experience across both clean water and wastewater projects, including infrastructure and non-infrastructure works.
- Understanding of construction methods and materials.
- Strong knowledge of engineering drawing standards and practices.
