Location: St Asaph
Duties Mandatory Responsibilities
- Adherence to all Company policies, management systems and standard operational procedures, including legal responsibilities in relation to Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality
- Working positively to develop and foster good working relationships with colleagues and contracted personnel in order to maintain a culture of mutual respect and dignity
- Promote and display the G&H values:
Customer focus, Integrity, Action, Unity, Precision - Maintain good attendance at Coleg Landrillo
- Assist in the production of jigs and fixtures
- Learn to operate machines such as Lathes, Milling Machines, Grinding Machines and CNC Machines
- Read and interpret technical/engineering drawings
- Measure and inspect components using precision tools e.g. micrometres, callipers
- Support with the maintenance and repair of existing tooling
- Gain experience working alongside experienced Toolmakers and Engineers
- Work collaboratively with engineers and skilled toolmakers to support ongoing production and improvement activities
- Attend Coleg Landrillo, on average, once per week
At G&H Phoenix we specialise in producing high-quality optical components used in demanding applications across defence, aerospace, industrial, space and research sectors worldwide. During your Apprenticeship, you will receive comprehensive training combining hands‑on experience in the workshop with structured off‑the‑job learning as part of your Apprenticeship programme.
- Hands‑on workshop training in machining techniques, including milling, turning, grinding and polishing
- Training in the setup and operation of CNC machinery
- Guidance on reading and interpreting engineering drawings and technical specifications
- Use of precision measurement equipment such as micrometres and gauges
- Understanding of materials and processes used in optics manufacturing
- Training in quality control procedures and maintaining high manufacturing standards
- Health and safety training to ensure safe working practices in a workshop environment
- Experience with hand tooling
- Building a strong mechanical understanding and problem‑solving mindset
You will also have the opportunity to spend time shadowing colleagues in other departments, ensuring you witness the entire optical production process from raw glass to finished, polished and coated parts.
RequirementsQualifications
- Essential: GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English and Science (Grace 4/C or above preferred)
- Desired: NVQ Level 2 in Performing Engineering Operations is desirable, otherwise must also be undertaken as part of the Apprenticeship
£18,252 per annum
