We are looking for a reliable and organised Finance Officer to support our management team on a part‑time basis.

What we're looking for:
  • Experience in bookkeeping or finance administration
  • Comfortable using accounting software and Microsoft Excel
  • Good attention to detail and a methodical approach

Experience in a healthcare setting is beneficial but not essential.

Main duties of the job

You’ll support the day‑to‑day financial administration of the practice, helping to keep things running smoothly behind the scenes. Working closely with the Practice Manager and GP Partners, your work will include tasks such as raising invoices, bank reconciliations, monitoring income, and assisting with payroll and year‑end processes.

St Helens Medical Centre is a busy 2 Partner, 6500 patient, village practice located in a prime coastal part of the Isle of Wight. We operate out of our own, purpose‑built, well‑equipped premises, with a branch surgery in the neighbouring village of Bembridge.

Job description Job responsibilities

To oversee the practice accounts, monitoring all income and expenditure, providing strong financial leadership that ensures the GP surgery remains financially sustainable, compliant, and able to deliver high‑quality healthcare services to its patient population. The role ensures accurate financial reporting, effective budgeting, cash flow management, regulatory compliance, and strategic financial planning to support high‑quality patient care and sustainable practice operations. Working closely with GP partners, the Practice Manager, and external accountant, the Finance Officer provides financial insight, monitors NHS income streams, manages expenditure, and supports business development initiatives.

Duties:
  • Prepare and monitor annual budgets, forecasts, and financial plans.
  • Oversee practice accounting, claims, invoices and reconciliations.
  • Raising invoices, following up missed payments and liaising with payment providers to ensure payments are made.
  • Produce quarterly financial performance reports.
  • Manage cash flow, banking, payroll oversight, and financial controls.
  • Monitor NHS funding, enhanced service payments, and other income streams.
  • Ensure compliance with NHS, HMRC, and statutory financial regulations.
  • Support year‑end accounts preparation and liaise with external accountant.
  • Analyse financial data and provide recommendations to Practice Manager.
  • Monitor contracts, service agreements, and financial risks.
  • Compliance with petty cash, cash handling and banking duties
  • Contribute to business planning, service development, and cost‑efficiency initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and ensure robust governance arrangements.
  • Liaising with external payroll systems.
  • Support the Practice Manager/Partners.
Person Specification Experience Essential
  • Experience of bookkeeping.
  • Experience using accounting software and Microsoft Excel for financial analysis and reporting.
  • Experience in financial management, preferably within healthcare, primary care, or NHS environments.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
Desirable
  • Experience of payroll processes, and supplier payments.
  • Understanding of NHS funding mechanisms and GP contract finances.
