Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Groundskeeper
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for the maintenance and beautification of City parks, recreational fields, and associated facilities. The Parks Maintenance Technician performs a variety of duties related to grounds upkeep, equipment/facilities repair, irrigation, and facility support to ensure safe and well-maintained public spaces for the community.
As a municipal organization, the City of St. Marys is an emergency provider of services. Some emergency situations, including weather related emergencies, may necessitate City of St. Marys employees to assist in areas of work which may not be directly related to the employee’s specific job function, but which will be within the physical capabilities, training, and skills of the employee.
MAJORDUTIES
The Public Works Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. Work is reviewed for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the quality of results.
GUIDELINESGuidelines include City and department policies and procedures, safety regulations, and equipment operation manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK- The work consists of varied technical and maintenance duties.
- The purpose of this position is to maintain and beautify City parks and associated recreation facilities. Successful performance results in safe, attractive, and well-maintained community spaces.
- Contacts are typically with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
- Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
- The work is typically performed while standing, walking, bending, stooping, climbing, or crouching. Occasionally having to utilize additional equipment like a bucket truck to replace lights or trim trees.
- The employee frequently lifts light to heavy objects, operates tools and equipment requiring dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
- Work is performed outdoors in hot, cold, or inclement weather and may involve exposure to dust, dirt, grease, and chemicals. Appropriate protective equipment such as masks, gloves, and goggles is required.
This position has functional supervision over assigned personnel within an area, department, or unit. Functional supervision typically involves the ability to assign, coordinate, and review quality and quantity of work of other employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- One (1) year of experience in grounds, facilities, or parks maintenance preferred.
- Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
- Possession of a valid state driver’s license issued for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Ability to obtain pesticide applicator certification (if required).
- Level 1 and Level 2 Sports Field Management Association (SFMA) Certification or ability to obtain certification within 6 months.
