As a Field Service Technician – Network you will install, troubleshoot, repair and maintain telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases, including Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems and other business systems. You will perform work associated with splicing and maintaining outside plant facilities, installing, splicing, repairing and maintaining aerial, buried, and underground fiber optic and copper cable. You will have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within telecommunications, and will have direct, face‑to‑face contact with our customers.
You are expected to be proactive with the sales of TDS services and products, including Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet and high‑speed networks. You must provide extraordinary customer service, identify customer needs, and offer them communications solutions. You will also use and demonstrate TDS products, seek sales opportunities and educate the customer. Additionally, you may perform varied duties for other Field Services Technician positions as required by TDS.
Due to the in‑field support and on‑call requirements, you must reside within a 60‑minute driving distance of the Saint Marys, Georgia warehouse.
This position may be hired at either the Field Service Technician, Field Service Technician – Network or Field Service Technician – Network Specialist level, depending on your qualifications. Refer to the specific job posting for the minimum qualifications for each role.
- Assist with and perform on‑site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities and other TDS products & services for new and existing customers. Identify the location of defective cable using various test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground and customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs.
Clock climbing and operating construction equipment is required. Locate, identify and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage. Maintain orderly logs of all locate requests. Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities. - Assist with and provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections. Respond to “trouble” dispatches.
- Assist with and provide support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
- Provide excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers.
- Develop working knowledge of RUS standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment.
Required Qualifications
- One or more years of basic technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge.
- At least six months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation, and/or switch training.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Must follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business needs.
- Upon hire, you must successfully complete customer‑specific requirements, including a background check administered by the customer.
- Must be available for on‑call/standby responsibilities, occasional travel, and overtime as needed.
- Upon hire, must successfully pass all components of the Safety Course curriculum and maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW >10,000 lbs.
