OverviewThe Registered Respiratory Therapist works under the supervision of the Director of Respiratory Services, Technical Supervisor, and Shift Supervisors to provide and administer all aspects of respiratory care therapy and supportive equipment as stated in the Department Policy and Procedure Manual.
Responsibilities- Assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with pulmonary disorders in critical and non‑critical areas pursuant to physician prescriptions.
- Perform cardiopulmonary evaluation, monitoring, respiratory therapy treatment techniques, respiratory procedures, and patient and family education.
- Acquire, analyze, and interpret data from physiological specimens, conduct diagnostic tests, and study the cardiopulmonary system and related neurophysiological studies.
- Administer or monitor medical gases, mechanical ventilation support, artificial airway care, bronchopulmonary hygiene, pharmacologic agents related to respiratory care procedures, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation.
- Apply scientific principles to identify, prevent, remediate, research, and rehabilitate acute or chronic cardiopulmonary dysfunction.
- Administer therapeutic respiratory care procedures and set up equipment as prescribed by the physician.
- Record all pertinent information of therapeutic procedures and patient responses in the EPIC electronic medical record system.
- Set up, verify, operate, and monitor invasive and non‑invasive respiratory equipment for patients requiring respiratory assistance.
- Participate in managing patients on life support systems, recommending and performing changes based on blood gas results and weaning studies.
- Respond to and participate in all emergency and trauma codes.
- Oversee the clinical performance of Certified Respiratory Care Technicians to ensure compliance with department policies and procedures.
- Change and maintain ventilators and ventilator circuits per Infection Control Policy.
- Run quality controls on blood gas analyzers.
- Monitor and change all manifold systems, including oxygen, nitrous oxide, and nitrogen cylinders.
- Retrieve, clean, and assemble all respiratory equipment using disinfecting solutions and cleaning agents per infection control protocols.
- Identify patient population needs and modify care accordingly, communicating with patients and primary caregivers at appropriate developmental and literacy levels.
- Lift a minimum of 35 lbs., push and pull a minimum of 165 lbs., and stand for a minimum of 6 hours a day.
- Adhere to the standards identified in the Medical Center’s Organizational Competencies.
- Perform other duties as requested by the Director or designee.
- Graduate of an AMA‑approved Respiratory Care program.
- Associate degree.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all clinical aspects of respiratory care.
- NJ Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
- NJ Registered Respiratory Therapist Certificate.
- AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification.
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support Certification.
Starting at $43.65 hourly (subject to change based on experience, education, certifications, market, and internal equity).
