Mechanical Design Engineer
We are recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a well-established, global engineering organisation specialising in packaging equipment used widely across the FMCG sector, including fulfilment, food and logistics environments.
This is an excellent opportunity to take ownership of design projects, work closely with customers, and play a key role in developing innovative, bespoke mechanical solutions.
The RoleAs a Mechanical Design Engineer within the Innovation & NPD team, you will be responsible for:
- Developing customised packaging and mechanical products based on specific customer requirements
- Producing overall design and assembly drawings
- Creating detailed manufacturing drawings for in-house and international production
- Generating Bills of Materials and obtaining costings at initial concept stage
- Liaising directly with customers alongside Sales to ensure designs meet expectations
- Coordinating with the Project Manager to ensure timely project delivery
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of existing product ranges
- Completing product performance checklists for initial production builds
This role combines hands‑on mechanical design with customer interaction and project ownership, offering real variety and responsibility within a fast‑paced packaging equipment environment.
About You as a Mechanical Design EngineerYou will bring a strong mechanical engineering background and be confident designing mechanisms and fabricated assemblies.
Key experience and attributes include:
- Proven expertise in mechanisms, fabricated assemblies and sheet metalwork
- Experience working on capital equipment, machinery or packaging equipment (highly desirable)
- A creative, user‑focused approach to engineering
- Good understanding of ergonomics and health & safety
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously using systems such as Teams and Share Point
- Ability to reverse engineer quickly from customer‑supplied .STP files
- Strong Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) experience
- Numerically strong with a detailed and methodical approach
- Ability to identify critical‑to‑quality features based on customer expectations for both internal and external inspection
- Excellent working knowledge of Solid Works 3D CAD or similar design software
- Experience of 3DX or a similar PLM system
- Demonstrated ability to produce accurate and detailed manufacturing information to deadline
- Experience working effectively within a small engineering team
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
