The OpportunityWe have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Bridges Engineer/Bridges Engineer to join our Amey Consulting team in Stafford. We welcome applications from Structural Engineers who can commute to this region on a hybrid basis (Birmingham/Manchester).
Amey delivers bridge engineering consultancy services to infrastructure clients throughout the UK and overseas. Our experienced engineering teams support the whole asset life cycle through design, construction, inspection, assessment and maintenance. This role is to lead highway structures projects, working within a multidisciplinary consultancy and interfacing with stakeholders, to develop sustainable engineering solutions to budget and programme aligned with client expectations.

Stafford Design HubSince 2014, our Infrastructure Plus contract with Staffordshire County Council has maintained Staffordshire’s highway asset comprising 6.200km of road, with an appropriate annual budget of £80 million.
The structures team maintains critical infrastructure valued at £2 billion, comprising over 1,200 bridges, dams and other specialist structures. Schemes delivered range from multimillion‑pound bypasses such as Stafford Western Access Route, new bridge design, structures replacement, maintenance and assessment. We also work proactively with other infrastructure owners and developers to optimise road space and ensure appropriate technical solutions are implemented.
The Role- Lead a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions.
- Take ownership and lead projects from start to finish, from preparing the quotation all the way to handover.
- Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the criteria of quality, cost and programme.
- Oversee the actions of more junior members of staff undertaking similar tasks and take responsibility for their actions.
- Contribute to the professional development of junior staff and act as a Delegated Engineer.
- Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings, and respond to queries.
- Manage a small, locally based single discipline technical team and take responsibility for delivery of their workload.
- Contribute to the preparation of bids and general work‑winning function.
- Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.
- Developed experience and expertise within the Structures field, probably gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
- An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
- Takes ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
- Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g. LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
- Demonstrates good commercial awareness.
- Has a good understanding of CDM and risk assessment.
- Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
- Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management, and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
- Incorporated/Chartered status or working towards chartership with the ICE or Istruct
E, or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts. - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
