Mechanical Engineer, Engineering Design & Technologists, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineer
Job Description Summary
As part of the Mechanical Engineering team based in Stafford, the candidate will report to the Mechanical Engineering Team Leader within the HVDC Valve Converter Engineering function. The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated and dynamic team of engineers working on the development and deployment of existing and new power electronics applications for power systems, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming “HVDC Grid.”
This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition. HVDC Valve Converters are large and complex structures, with typical dimensions of several metres in each direction and weighing many tens of tonnes. The design and development of such converters is technically challenging and involves a variety of engineering disciplines, teamwork, and an innovative approach.
The role offers an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skills, and support their personal development within an internationally recognised company in this exciting field. While based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford, there will be some international travel to collaborate with other GE teams, test laboratories, strategic suppliers, and contract customers.
- Mechanical development and analysis of power electronic converter valves for HVDC & FACTs.
- Perform mechanical engineering calculations and simulations, with a focus on stress analysis of solids.
- Application of specifications into key components such as structural steel and composites, cooling systems, corona shields & insulators to capture and translate design intent to stakeholders.
- Support industrialization, site works and commissioning.
- Issue, review and approve drawings.
- Issue, review and approve design documentation.
- Carry out validation and contribute to reporting of tests.
- Innovation of new technical ideas for patent applications.
- Integration with other engineering departments for product development and project teams.
- Industrialization of the validated design by interacting with stakeholders.
- Actively broaden and deepen HVDC knowledge and share specialized expertise with other engineers of any level.
- Strict adherence to standards and legislation.
- Promotion and adherence to EHS policies within the team.
- Occasional global travel for product validations and supply chain integration + site support.
- Good understanding of the application of mechanical engineering principles such as stress analysis and calculations.
- Familiarity with the application of FEA tools, such as Creo Simulate or Ansys.
- Familiarity with seismic studies under different standards such as IEEE
693. - Proficient with 3D CAD tools, preferably Creo 4.0 or later and Windchill PDMlink.
