Occupational Therapist - Prisons and approved premises
Staffordshire County Council invites applications for an Occupational Therapist to join the high-performing Prisons and Approved Premises team within the Health and Care Directorate.
Adults in prisons and approved premises are entitled to the same access to services as community members. This team delivers statutory care and support to adults in custodial settings, ensuring they receive the support needed to maximise independence.
As a member of the 'Assessment and Care Management' teams, you will travel to prisons supported by Staffordshire County Council and work a mix of home and office days.
Main Responsibilities- Support the Adult Social Care Service to deliver statutory care and support to individuals in prisons and approved premises.
- Conduct occupational therapy assessments and provide appropriate support in the prison setting.
- Carry an active caseload and undertake assessments of adults and older people with less complex needs, including initial assessments and needs of carers, in accordance with departmental policy and procedure, and contribute to the development and implementation of care plans.
- Identify and assess risks associated with moving and handling and contribute towards implementation of recommendations to reduce risk.
- Provide occupational therapy intervention to adults with less complex needs, including recommendations for adaptations, equipment, rehabilitation programmes, and counselling and advice as necessary.
- Provide occupational therapy advice on initial enquiries, supporting the first contact service.
You’ll be passionate about adult social care and committed to supporting adults and young people across the county.
- Be a qualified Occupational Therapist registered with HCPC and have experience in adult social care working with individuals across a range of settings.
- Have a proven track record of a person-centred and asset-focused outlook and maintain high professional standards.
- Have sound knowledge and experience of current legislation and its application to practice.
- Uphold the standard of practice for Occupational Therapists as defined by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and, in accordance with the Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT).
- Have robust clinical grounding and be innovative and creative, providing holistic and strength-based solutions.
- Have applied knowledge of the Care Act and the Mental Capacity Act and experience applying them.
- Experience working in complex situations using professional judgement and a range of interventions.
- Communicate in a clear, jargon-free manner and in a courteous, calm, and professional manner.

Interviews will be expected to take place, week commencing 19th January 2026.
This is a permanent, full-time role working 37 hours per week Monday – Friday with consideration for flexible working. The role is based at Staffordshire Place 1, Stafford, but work will be undertaken within the prisons and approved premises across Staffordshire.
