Practice Nurse – General Medical Services (GMS) Training Practice
An exciting opportunity to join our well‑organised and innovative GMS training practice in Stafford as a Practice Nurse supporting a team of Nurses and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
Job SummaryProvide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, while offering assistance to doctors and other primary healthcare team members.
Responsibilities- Assist and perform routine patient care tasks directed by senior nursing staff and GPs, including:
- Removal of sutures
- Review of long‑term conditions
- Urinalysis
- Prescriber – preferred
- Cervical cytology
- Peak flow readings
- Blood pressure measurements
- Routine immunisations
- Chaperoning and assisting patients during examinations by other clinicians
- Assisting GPs with minor surgery, ENT clinics and coil fittings
- Requesting basic pathology tests (eg urine culture, swabs, phlebotomy)
- Following agreed clinical protocols with referral to senior nurses or GPs as appropriate
- Other duties, including:
- Ensuring infection control protocols are followed
- Cleaning and sterilising equipment
- Maintaining and calibrating equipment used by nurses and GPs
- Maintaining GP and nurse rooms, stocking and rotating items as required
- General housekeeping duties for nurses and treatment rooms
- Ordering health promotion literature, stock from the local hospital, and vaccinations to maintain stock levels
- Participation in administrative systems in the practice
- Maintaining accurate records at all times
- Advising senior staff of potential problems or errors within the range of assigned tasks
- Attending and participating in practice meetings when required
- Any other delegated duties appropriate to the post
- Report to senior nurses and GPs clinically, and to the practice manager administratively (hours to be negotiated).
- Strict confidentiality and privacy of patient information.
- Use of own judgment, resourcefulness and common sense.
- Commitment to maintain a high professional standard of nursing care and keep up to date with all relevant aspects of nursing practice.
- Commitment to meet all Health and Safety requirements and Infection Control measures.
- Effective use of practice and NHS resources.
- Awareness of own limitations and experience.
- Participation in annual appraisal meetings.
- Membership of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN).
- Qualified Nurse, preferably with experience in managing long‑term conditions.
- Current CGP or equivalent nursing qualification.
- Membership of the RCN.
