Head of Trading - Grocery

A well‑established retail and wholesale organisation with a diverse portfolio of stores is seeking to appoint a Head of Trading to lead one of the categories within their Grocery Trading function. This senior commercial role will shape the trading strategy, drive category performance, and lead a team of Buyers to deliver a competitive, customer‑focused proposition across both retail and wholesale channels.

About the Role

Via the leadership of your team, you will be responsible for delivering sales growth, profit margin and supplier income across your categories, ensuring a compelling range, strong promotional execution and effective supplier partnerships.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading, developing and coaching Buyers and Buying Assistants to support a high‑performance culture.
• Driving sales revenue, profit margin and commercial income across the category.
• Leading category reviews, selecting and sourcing relevant products and ranges.
• Developing and executing promotional and seasonal plans aligned to customer needs.
• Maintaining accurate pricing files and ensuring competitive price positions.
• Leading supplier negotiations to secure strong terms, pricing and promotional support.
• Identifying cost savings, efficiencies and points of difference within the range.
• Working with suppliers and supply chain teams to create accurate forecasts and maximise availability.
• Conducting regular store visits to ensure a relevant and competitive product offer.
• Communicating category plans cross‑functionally to ensure alignment across the business.
• Staying informed on retail trends, competitor activity and market requirements.
• Ensuring compliance with commercial and legislative standards.

About the Person

This role suits an experienced retail or wholesale Buying / Trading professional with strong category management capability and a proven track record of delivering commercial results.

You will bring:

• Significant experience in Buying, Trading or Category Management within grocery.
• Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with confidence in closing deals.
• Proven ability to deliver financial targets and category performance.
• Strong analytical and decision‑making capability.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence at all levels.
• A collaborative, team‑focused approach with the ability to develop and motivate colleagues.
• The ability to work under pressure and manage tight deadlines.
• Strong customer focus and understanding of retail and wholesale dynamics.
