Position: Seasonal Laborer (MVO)

Seasonal Laborer (MVO) – National Park Service

Summary

These vacancies are temporary seasonal positions not to exceed 1039 hours in a service year. The typical seasonal entry‑on‑duty period is April/May 2026.

Primary Purpose

The primary purpose of the position is to perform laboring duties that require moderately heavy physical effort using common hand tools and power equipment. Incumbent will also operate light duty motor vehicles up to 10,000 pounds to transport personnel, material, and equipment to work sites located on the park.

Major Duties
  • Maintain landscapes and roadsides using equipment including riding mowers, push mowers, weed eaters, 3‑blade trimmers, backpack blowers, work trucks, and hand tools.
  • Perform custodial services such as cleaning the restrooms, Visitor Centers, and administrative offices and emptying interior trash cans.
  • Pick up litter along roadsides and empty interior trash cans.
  • Perform trail maintenance.
  • Load and unload supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc.
  • Move furniture, remove and set signs, paint picnic tables and signs, rake and water lawns, trim trees and shrubbery, pick up litter, clean and repair fire pits.
  • Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where soil is hard and compact and must grade or slope; occasionally break up pavement, soil, or concrete; mix and pour concrete, asphalt, hot/cold mix; fill and level holes in damaged roads. Move heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; use heavy power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning, and oiling.
  • Cut trees and heavy vegetation with axe, chainsaw, or powered brush cutters; stack heavy logs, lumber, sacks of cement, etc., or perform other duties requiring comparable judgement and physical effort.
Conditions of Employment
  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
  • Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
  • Direct deposit: selectees must participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
  • Driver's license: must operate a government or private motor vehicle; a valid driver's license is required. Applicants must submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License, Driving Record, and all certified driving records from every state.
  • Vehicle operations: may be required to complete training and operate a four‑wheel drive vehicle.
  • Uniform: must wear a uniform and comply with National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • Work schedule:

    may be required to work on‑call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
  • Government housing: housing may be available at Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park.
  • Minimum age: applicants must be at least 18, or 16 with at least one of the following: (a) graduate from high school or be awarded an equivalent certificate; (b) complete a formal vocational training program; (c) receive a statement from school authorities favoring employment over continued education; or (d) be currently enrolled in secondary school and work only during school vacation periods or part‑time under a formal student employment program.
Qualifications
  • Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (screen out).
  • Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (other than blueprints).
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
  • Dexterity and safety.
  • Vehicle operation.
  • Work practices (including keeping things neat, clean, and in order).

Performed the most difficult and complex laborer tasks, including ability to operate trucks and trailers weighing up to one ton, properly loading and unloading various supplies and equipment; to provide laboring assistance to others in the maintenance of buildings, grounds, roads, and trails; operate power equipment such as lawnmowers, snow blowers, and string trimmers; and safely use a variety of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hammers, saws, pulaskis, rock bars, etc.
