Head of Physics

Stamford values the role of Physics in the curriculum, recognising it as part of the Science faculty. Physics at Stamford is currently taught by a team of specialist teachers, some of whom hold additional responsibilities and/or contribute to the teaching of a second Science. Our Physics teachers are passionate about the subject: all contribute to the department’s enrichment activities, which include competitions provided by the Physics Olympiad.

The Head of Physics is directly accountable to the Head of Science, the Deputy Head Academic and the Head of the Senior School for the leadership, organisation and management of their department. They are responsible for the delivery of their subject and, in conjunction with the Head of Science, for liaising with SJS to ensure that the curriculum for their subject builds as students progress through the School.

The Head of Physics is responsible for GCSE and A Level Physics. The Head of Physics is also expected to contribute to the success of Key Stage 3 Science and GCSE Combined Science, acting as a source of expertise for the Physics components.

The Head of Physics should show leadership in inspiring standards of excellence in teaching and learning and plays a key role in the development of Science y support the vision for Science and, in consultation with the Head of Science, deliver the development plan for the Physics department within the framework of the Towards 2032 whole school strategic plan. They are expected to monitor, support, review and motivate other teachers of Physics, setting high professional standards in all aspects of work with targets for professional development and improvement.

Outstanding leadership of a department is often the strongest influence on staff in developing their own leadership, management and teaching styles.

The ethos of this role is characterised by a willingness to continually improve, an honesty and openness to learn from mistakes, an enthusiasm for Physics, an attitude of service to students and a commitment to first class results. In a successful department, students will enjoy the study of Physics and appropriate numbers will opt to take the subject; discussion of Physics will not be limited to the classroom;

and students will look to continue studying Physics beyond school. Department staff will find their teaching fulfilling and interesting and be inspired to seek ongoing professional development.

• A good honours degree in Physics, or a related discipline, and a teaching qualification.
• A post-graduate qualification in Education, such as a Master’s, would be an advantage.
• Experience of teaching across the 11-18 range.
• Evidence of recent and relevant Continuing Professional Development.

• Proven excellent standards of classroom practice across the full ability and age range.
• Experience of successfully implementing strategies for raising achievement and achieving excellence.
• Experience of leading innovation or managing change.
• Experience of organising documents, data analysis and target setting.
• Experience of working with others to develop teaching skills.

• Excellent classroom practitioner and has a commitment to continually improving classroom practice.
• Ability to inspire, challenge, motivate and empower others.
• Excellent written and oral communication.
• Proficient in the use of IT and has a commitment to maximise benefits of new technologies.
• Demonstrates a good knowledge and understanding of current educational issues relating to Physics, including policy, legal frameworks, wider development in curriculum and assessment; make informed use of research and inspection findings.
• Demonstrates knowledge of how to promote equality and ensure inclusive teaching and learning practices.
• Demonstrates thorough knowledge of effective practices to safeguard children.
