Job Description

Stamford Health has an opportunity for a per diem Pharmacy Oncology Technician!

The Pharmacy Oncology Technician, under pharmacist supervision, is responsible for all aspects of sterile compounding, inventory management, dispensing and distribution of hazardous and non-hazardous drugs in the outpatient oncology pharmacy infusion center. He/she shall oversee inventory management of costly chemotherapy and biotherapy drugs, assist in managing drug shortages, and ensure 340B purchasing requirements are enforced. He/she shall comply with all applicable regulatory standards governing sterile compounding of hazardous drugs and shall work to support pharmacy services.

Responsibilities
  • Works safely, accurately, and efficiently in an environment of hazardous drugs daily while adhering to best practice standards and organizational policies and procedures.
  • Complies with USP
    797 regulatory standards for sterile compounding and USP
    800 regulatory standards for handling hazardous drugs which includes proper PPE, aseptic technique, deactivating, cleaning, and disinfection of pharmacy areas, and handling hazardous waste.
  • Demonstrates full understanding of all SHS policies concerning hazardous drugs and sterile compounding.
  • Successfully completes semi-annual sterile competencies as required by USP
    797.
  • Maintains pharmacy environment according to USP, OSHA, ONS, QOPI and Joint Commission standards.
  • Complies with DSDCA inventory requirements utilizing appropriate software daily upon inventory receipt communicating any discrepancies immediately.
  • Maintains knowledge of the 340B Drug Pricing Program and adheres to the program when purchasing or acquiring medications.
  • Serves as a resource to clinical and billing staff regarding drug dispensing and preparation.
  • Monitors medication usage, expiration, and pharmaceutical waste.
  • Aseptically prepares chemotherapeutic and non-chemotherapeutic products with accuracy and efficiency and in a manner to ensure minimal delay in patient care.
  • Consistently demonstrates specialized knowledge and understanding of the safe handling and disposal of chemotherapy agents as outlined by OSHA, USP 797, USP
    800, ONS, QOPI and Joint ACHO standards.
  • Maintains a clean, organized sterile compounding suite that complies with the standards of USP
    797 and USP
    800 and adheres to internal policies and procedures.
  • Conducts and electronically documents daily quality metrics such as temperature, humidity, air pressure differential, cleaning and disinfection for the sterile compounding suite and alerts pharmacy leadership of any excursions that are not compliant with the established standards.
  • Evaluates appropriate medication pars/needs, ensures inventory is appropriate, and proactively assesses medication needs in advance.
  • Utilizes Dose Edge Pharmacy Work Flow Manager to prepare sterile products and consistently adheres to proper technique, bar code scanning and other quality metrics to ensure patient safety.
  • Ensures appropriate labeling of all compounded sterile preparations contains accurate Beyond Use Date and other regulatory labeling requirements.
  • Reviews pars of medications and supplies daily and orders from wholesaler, other vendors, or materials management via Oracle ERP to ensure par levels are appropriate and do not delay patient care.
  • Proactively follows up on back ordered medications to ensure appropriate inventory to prevent delay in patient treatment.
  • Processes bi-weekly invoice in Meditech. Maintains file of past orders.
  • Conducts inventory monitoring to remove expired drugs and supplies from all storage areas including pyxis.
  • Conducts inventory monitoring report to ensure accuracy of quantity-on-hand.
  • Prepares emergency response kit.
  • Replenishes pyxis daily for low par or out of stock items ensuring expiration dating and storage conditions are met.
  • May assist in preparation of medications for weekend injections at the Main campus infusion center.
  • Works with Patient Assistance and Billing office as required when receiving patients' own supply or drug replacement medications.
  • Has
Qualifications / Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of Connecticut.
  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in hospital or infusion therapy setting with sterile compounding experience.
  • National pharmacy technician certification (CPhT) or PTCB preferred upon hire. Must obtain national certification within six (6) months from date of hire.
