Veterinary Student Externship – Stamford Veterinary Center
United Veterinary Care is delighted to host veterinary students for externships! This valuable clinical experience allows students to apply classroom knowledge in an animal hospital of their choice. Our hands‑on externships are designed exclusively for veterinary students at AVMA‑accredited schools in their clinical years – typically their 3rd or 4th year of vet school. We offer programs at a wide variety of partner hospitals and provide stipends to offset travel and lodging costs, unless prohibited by the student’s attending veterinary school.
EligibilityRequirements
- Must be a current veterinary student at an AVMA‑accredited veterinary school.
- Priority scheduling is given to students in their clinical years during official externship blocks for school credit.
- Must provide proof of professional liability insurance. SAVMA members qualify for no‑cost insurance by applying at the following link: SAVMA Member Benefit and Resources | AVMA PLIT.

During your externship, you will actively participate in cases and develop toward becoming a veterinarian. You will be supervised by an experienced veterinarian and supportive staff who will serve as mentors. Expect to be included in surgical cases, dental procedures, emergencies, sick patient workups, and routine medical appointments. If you have particular technical skills you want to improve, let us know so we can place emphasis on these areas.
We encourage active participation, client interaction, and thorough patient history, exam, and diagnostic planning. You will discuss cases with your supervising veterinarian to confirm findings and approaches. Externs are encouraged to select one case per week to research further and engage in case discussion.
We truly enjoy hosting externs and welcoming new graduates who bring fresh knowledge to our teams.
