Research Scientist Position (Onsite Opportunity)
Position Summary:
The Department of Communication at Stanford is seeking a research scientist (Physicist) for an interdisciplinary study of observer effects related to the quantum measurement problem. This role will investigate wave function collapse with both physics and psychological perspectives within the Institute for Research in Social Sciences.
Responsibilities include:
- Designing and executing experiments such as the Tonomura double‑slit experiment using a BBO crystal and a Mach‑Zehnder interferometer.
- Conducting a comprehensive review of literature on variables influencing wave function collapse.
- Developing and applying novel methods for assessing and controlling observational variables.
- Analyzing data and publishing results in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Devoting 80 % of time to this research project, with the remaining 20 % available for other research interests at Stanford.
Qualifications
- PhD in empirical physics (preferred).
- Strong background in experimental methods, especially related to quantum measurement.
- Experience collecting and analyzing laboratory data.
- Ability to review published physics literature and write manuscripts through peer review.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary range: $70,000 – $99,000 per year. Position is 100 % full‑time fixed‑term for one year with potential renewal. Compensation adjusted based on geographic region.
