Job PurposePerform non‑sworn, un‑armed security and parking enforcement duties to provide a safe environment for faculty, staff, students and visitors on the Stanford campus.
Position DescriptionPublic Safety Officers (PSO) support the overall public safety mission of the Department of Public Safety (DPS) by performing a variety of functions under the general supervision of a civilian supervisor, sergeant, or other designated officer in charge. Specific duties include patrols by foot, bicycle, motor vehicle or other DOT‑approved methods, enforcement of parking regulations, traffic‑control services during emergencies and special events, first‑aid or CPR, standing a security post, and staffing the Operations Desk to monitor daily security operations.
CoreDuties
- Patrol designated areas of the campus, observing for suspicious activity, safety hazards, unlocked doors, and opportunities to assist the public; document concerns and notify appropriate departments.
- Respond to door alarms in student housing and academic areas.
- Open and/or close Field Sites and Matadero Creek Trail access.
- Provide information, directions, and assistance to community members.
- Coordinate the campus Bike Abatement program, including abandoned bike tagging/pickup and sales/donations.
- Enforce parking regulations, issue citations using license‑plate recognition or electronic ticket writers.
- Conduct periodic parking utilization surveys requested by Transportation Services.
- Deploy barricades, cones, and other traffic‑control equipment for events; remove equipment post‑event.
- Drive vehicles and forklifts to transport equipment and towing barricade trailers.
- Provide safety, security, traffic‑control, logistics support during campus events.
- Staff the DPS Operations Desk: monitor radio traffic, respond to calls, issue equipment, track field‑personnel activities.
- Maintain readiness to issue mass‑notification alerts via the university’s Alert
SU system. - Assist during emergencies and critical incidents, implement the Incident Command System.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
High‑school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required- Exceptional customer‑service skills and ability to interact positively with the public under trying circumstances.
- Effective oral and written communication, including work with a diverse group.
- Flexibility, calmness, and sound judgment in handling situations.
- Understanding and application of university and departmental policies.
- Confidentiality of sensitive information at all times.
- Proficiency with two‑way radio communication.
- Familiarity with the Stanford campus.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Word Perfect).
- Certification in First Aid/CPR and ability to maintain it.
- Physical condition suitable for assigned duties.
- Desire to learn, accept, and promote the Department’s Core Values.
- Valid CA driver’s license.
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, desk‑based computer tasks, fine manipulation, occasional lifting up to 40 lbs. Vision confirmed to 20/30, normal hearing.
Working Conditions- Shift work (days, swings, overnights, weekends, holidays); 24‑hour response availability during emergencies.
- Personal protective equipment required as defined by job assignments.
- Exposure to laboratories, outdoor work, and inclement weather.
- Mandatory overtime as needed.
Compliance with California Vehicle Code, Stanford driving requirements, and all departmental and university policies.
Special Requirements- Complete background investigation (local, state, national).
- Training for dispatching, emergency call‑taking, incident command system, and special event logistics.
- Possibility of response to chemical, nuclear or biological threats, requiring Class B PPE and annual fitness and lung‑capacity tests.
- Successful completion of the Field Training Program; non‑completion may lead to termination.
- Forklift operation training.
- Participation and approval of Oleoresin Capsicum spray testing.
