About the role

Our Community Paediatric team is made up of a wide range of enthusiastic and passionate individuals which currently includes 5 consultants, 5 Specialty and Specialist (SAS) doctors and a diverse team of nursing staff. The clinical team is supported by a dedicated secretariat team, with office and networked computer facilities.

We are a busy centre, serving a large diverse population. Our community paediatric services are delivered across two hospital sites (Pinderfields General Hospital in Wakefield and Pontefract General Infirmary in Pontefract), which make up The Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals Trust. The service also delivers clinics within special schools and medical centres in the geographical area. Our vision is to deliver patient‑centred, accessible and integrated services as seamlessly as possible with primary care.

The dedicated team at Mid‑York sees around 4,500 patients through our outpatient departments. Our Trust has modern, spacious state‑of‑the‑art clinical, diagnostic and teaching facilities.

An Introduction to the Division/Specialty from the Head of Clinical Service

The Trust is made up of 3 sites delivering excellent clinical care from our hospitals at Pontefract, Wakefield and Dewsbury. We have a 26 bedded children’s ward with a 4 bedded children’s level 2 HDU at the Pinderfields site as well as a children’s assessment unit and 24-hour paediatric ED. We have a level 2 neonatal unit also at the Pinderfields site with 4 ICU cots.

Dewsbury also has a 12‑hour children’s assessment unit that runs from 10am until 10pm attached to the 24‑hour emergency department. Children’s outpatient services are delivered at all three Trust sites and in some community settings.

• General Community Paediatric Clinics, Neurodisability, Bladder and Bowel Management Clinics.
• Initial Health Assessments (IHA) for Looked After Children, with scope to contribute to adoption work, Pre‑Adoption Medicals (PAM) as the service develops.
• ADHD assessment (with potential involvement in triage pathways).
• Close multidisciplinary working with education, therapy services, CAMHS, local authority teams, and palliative care providers.
• Opportunities to contribute to clinical and educational supervision (following appropriate training).
• Administrative duties, with appropriate office accommodation and secretarial support provided.
• Promoting a strong multidisciplinary team approach across community paediatrics and partner agencies.
