Locum Consultant in Palliative Medicine

About the role

Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust (MYTT) is looking for a dynamic enthusiastic consultant to join the Specialist Palliative Care Team working predominantly supporting community services and Wakefield Hospice. This is a 9‑month fixed‑term locum post covering for maternity leave. The successful candidate will work with the Trust Specialist Palliative Care Team to provide services across the Wakefield and Pontefract community as well as the inpatient unit at Wakefield Hospice.

It is expected that the successful candidate will take a key role in providing community services and there is flexibility in the existing consultant team to enable pursuit of the successful candidate’s personal areas of interest. The post holder will work in a team of 7 consultants and 16 clinical nurse specialists who provide cross cover and support across hospital and community palliative medicine services.

MYTT End of Life Care Services were rated as good in our last CQC visit. The multidisciplinary community team see approximately 1250 referrals per year. The post will involve working closely with a consultant colleague to provide consultant oversight of the Wakefield Hospice inpatient service which will be a maximum of 16 beds. Wakefield Hospice has approximately 250 admissions per annum.

The post holder will have the opportunity to work at a locality level as part of the collaborative end of life care partnership group improving coordination of care of patients in the last year of life and ensuring a whole system approach to care. The teams are committed to education and service improvement with projects such as supporting the roll‑out of ReSPECT, supporting patients with non‑malignant respiratory disease, supporting patients dying with stroke, specialist palliative care hospital at initiative, developing The Rosewood Centre, as well as leading the delivery of the multidisciplinary Motor Neurone Disease Service.

The Prince of Wales Hospice in Pontefract provides lymphoedema services across the region. The post holder will not routinely provide on‑call services but would be expected to provide cover in unexpected circumstances at a frequency of a maximum of 1:8, which would be paid in addition to the 8 PAs. This is a second on‑call service providing out of hours telephone advice across the Mid Yorkshire, Huddersfield and Calderdale footprint.

The main duties of the post will include:

• Support for the Community Specialist Palliative Care Team with both joint and independent review of patients.
• Support for Gold Standards Framework meetings in primary care where appropriate.
• Community team MDT weekly
• Administrative duties, for which appropriate office space and secretarial support is provided
• Supporting Professional Activities in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1.5 SPAs included in the core 8 PA timetable. Core SPA includes audit and governance. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service.

• Twice weekly ward rounds of hospice inpatients
• Weekly MDT
• Clinical supervision for FY2/ IMT trainees at the hospice and specialist registrar on both sites if applicable and candidate has appropriate training. Training can be supported in post.
• Office accommodation with secretarial support is provided.

This post holder will be based at Pinderfields Hospital (PGH). There will be mentorship provided from a senior member of the team within the department.
