About Coastline College
Coastline College, a community college located just outside of Los Angeles in Orange County, California, has campuses in Westminster, Garden Grove and Newport Beach and an administration building in Fountain Valley, California. The college is part of the Coast Community College District and its sister colleges are Orange Coast College and Golden West College. The college is part of the California Community College system, which includes 116 community colleges statewide.

Non-academic, non-classified Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. The Education Code prohibits displacement of classified personnel by student employment in work-study or work experience programs. Student Assistants are at-will employees and are not benefits eligible.
- Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 working hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. They may work a maximum of 28 hours per week outside of those semesters.
- Student Assistants are prohibited from being employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).
A student assistant works in a department and has duties designed for students with non-classified responsibilities. Duties may range from unskilled to skilled and may require manual, clerical, and public contact tasks. Assignments consider class schedules and exams and are typically flexible.
Representative Duties: Specific duties are defined by the appropriate Division and/or Department. Considerable on-the-job training may occur.
Student Assistant classificationsStudent Assistant I – Entry level/Semi-skilled:
Work is under immediate supervision with routine and standardized tasks. May involve use of specialized equipment or software. Supervisors manage task assignments and instructions.
Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced:
Work under general supervision with some independence and on-the-job training. Responsibilities are varied and may involve access to data systems and confidential information. Some independent judgment is required. Minimum one year of experience in the same student assistant assignment.
Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead:
Work under general supervision with a broad range of tasks requiring considerable training. May direct lower-level student employees. Minimum two years of experience in the same assignment.

Skills and Competencies
- Skills required to perform job assignments.
- Depending on level and assignment, jobs may require limited independent judgment and decision-making.
- Ability to balance work and studies.
Qualifications:
- Students must be enrolled in classes for the current semester and have been awarded federal work-study to be eligible for a student assistant position under the federal work-study program.
- D.E.I.A – Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of diversity within the student population, including factors related to equity-minded practice.
