About Coastline College

Coastline College, a community college located just outside of Los Angeles in Orange County, California, has campuses in Westminster, Garden Grove and Newport Beach and an administration building in Fountain Valley. The college is part of the Coast Community College District, with sister colleges Orange Coast College and Golden West College. Student

Assistants (Non-Academic, Non-Classified)

Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. The Education Code prohibits displacement of classified personnel by student employment in work-study or work experience programs. Student Assistants are at-will employees, have no entitlement rights to any position, and are not benefits eligible.

  • Working hours
    :
    Student Assistants may not exceed 19.5 hours per week in fall/spring; maximum 28 hours per week outside fall/spring. They are prohibited from being employed by the District in any other capacity during the same fiscal year (July 1 – June 30).

A student assistant works in a department with duties designed for students as non-classified job responsibilities. Duties range from unskilled to skilled and may involve manual, clerical, or public-facing work. Assignments consider class timings and exams and are more flexible than off-campus jobs. Duties are determined by the needs of the department and may vary by assignment.

Representative Duties

Representative duties are defined by the appropriate Division and/or Department. Considerable on‑the‑job training may occur.

Student Assistant Levels
  • Student Assistant I – Entry level/Semi-skilled:
    Work under immediate supervision with routine, standardized duties. May involve use of special equipment or software; supervisor assigns work and provides instructions.
  • Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced:
    Work under general supervision; more varied tasks with moderate responsibility. May involve access to data systems and confidential information; typically at least one year in the same assignment.
  • Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead:
    Work under general supervision with broad, skilled tasks requiring independent judgment. May direct lower-level student employees and typically requires at least two years in the same assignment.
Education and Experience
  • Student Assistant I:
    Little or no prior experience or education required
  • Student Assistant II
    :
    Some previous knowledge, experience, or education required
  • Student Assistant III
    :
    Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required
Skills, Competencies, and Qualifications
  • Skills required to perform a job assignment.
  • Depending on the level and assignment, jobs may require limited independent judgment and decision-making.
  • Ability to balance work and studies.
  • Students must be full‑time students enrolled in a minimum of 12 units at the Coast Community College District (OCC, GWC, CCC) to be eligible for a student assistant position.
