About Coastline College:
Coastline College is a community college located just outside of Los Angeles in Orange County, California, with campuses in Westminster, Garden Grove and Newport Beach and an administration building in Fountain Valley. It is part of the Coast Community College District and the California Community College system. The college values diversity, inclusive practices, and equitable outcomes. Non-academic, non-classified Student Assistants are not part of the classified service. The Education Code prohibits displacement of classified personnel in work-study programs. Student Assistants are at-will employees and are not benefits eligible.
Position and ResponsibilitiesA student assistant works in a department with job responsibilities designed for a student as non-classified job responsibilities. Duties range from unskilled to skilled and may include clerical, public contact, or other tasks depending on the department. Assignments are designed to accommodate class schedules and exams and are more flexible than off-campus jobs.
Representative Duties: duties are defined by the appropriate Division and/or Department with on-the-job training as needed.
- Student Assistant I – Entry level/Semi-skilled: work under immediate supervision with standardized, routine tasks and possible use of special equipment or software;
- Student Assistant II – Intermediate/Advanced: work under general supervision with more varied tasks, potentially involving access to data systems and confidential information; may require independent judgment and at least one year of related experience;
- Student Assistant III – Specialist/Lead: work under general supervision with broad tasks requiring independent judgment; may direct lower-level student employees; typically two years of related experience.
Education and Experience:
- Student Assistant I:
Little or no prior experience or education required; - Student Assistant II:
Some knowledge, experience, or education required; - Student Assistant III:
Prior experience, education, or specialized skills required.
Skills and
Competencies:
- Skills required to perform job assignments.
- Depending on level, jobs may require limited independent judgment and decision-making.
- Ability to balance work and studies.
- Students must be enrolled in at least six units for the current semester.
- Students must have been awarded Federal Work-Study through the Financial Aid Office to be eligible for a student assistant position under the Federal Work-Study funding.
- Students must meet satisfactory academic progress (SAP).
- Students must have financial need as calculated by the Financial Aid Office.

AdditionalInformation and Conditions
- Employment is contingent upon verification of Federal Work-Study award, class schedule, employment history, background verification, eligibility to work in the United States, and approval by the CCCD Board of Trustees.
- Student Assistant assignments do not offer fringe benefits or pay for holidays or time not worked. Work hours and start dates are arranged with the supervisor.
- Regular attendance is an essential job function. The position may require compliance with Title IX and campus safety policies.
