Within this setting, the Department of English strives to produce graduates who understand the art and science of language, literature, and writing as exemplified by a free exchange of ideas in a respectful student-centered environment, a commitment to academic excellence, and collaborative support for each learner's individual academic achievement. With an interdisciplinary base degree and three concentrations (Literature, Professional Writing, and Creative Writing), the English major and M.A. program both support the university's mission to link theory with practice, extend the learning environment beyond the classroom, promote learner growth and life success, and facilitate learners' development as readers, writers, and thinkers.

Job Summary
Reporting to the department chair, the Assistant Professor of English in Creative Writing requires teaching three courses per term (six courses per year), ongoing scholarly productivity, as well as service responsibilities. The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded creative writer with substantial publications across fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. The successful candidate will contribute to the Creative Writing concentration (the largest in the department), support graduate creative thesis options, and enhance the program's ability to recruit and retain students through literary publishing and hosting events.
With Creative Writing enrollments rapidly increasing'including a 20% growth in online majors in the last year'the successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in launching an online Creative Writing concentration, expanding access and recruitment opportunities. The position is an academic (10 month) tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Required Qualifications
- Earned Ph.D. or MFA in Creative Writing or a closely related field by August 1, 2026 with at least 18 graduate semester hours in creative writing coursework.
