POSITION SUMMARY:
The Bulloch County Parent Mentor serves as a vital bridge between home, school, and the community. As part of the Georgia Parent Mentor Partnership (GaPMP), this role focuses on enhancing communication and fostering effective collaboration between families of students with disabilities, educators, and local agencies to increase student achievement and improve post-secondary outcomes. The Parent Mentor works closely with the Special Education Director to support family engagement initiatives and improve the district's State Performance Plan Indicator 8 (Parent Involvement).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- The candidate must be a parent of a child with a disability who is currently receiving, or has previously received, special education and related services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- High School Diploma/GED.
- Must have a current and valid driver's license.
- Experience working with a diverse group of people.
- Embodies the core values of the district; relational, purposeful, reflective, resourceful, courageous and accountable.
- Must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function of the position. When appropriate, reasonable accommodations will be provided to afford persons with disabilities an opportunity to perform the essential functions of the position.
- Must be able to provide a criminal background check with results that adhere to Bulloch County Board of Education Policy GAK(1).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Deep understanding of the special education system from a parent's perspective.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interface effectively with school administrators, teachers, state agencies, and diverse families.
- Ability to manage database contact lists, coordinate regional workshops, and fulfill state grant reporting deadlines.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Family Outreach & Communication- Compiles and distributes a monthly parent newsletter to self-contained teachers and parents.
- Communicates regularly with parents and teachers to provide guidance on local resources, assist in navigating school-home communication, help parents understand their child’s IEP, and assist in planning for life after school.
- Hosts informal Q&A nights where parents can learn what to expect during an IEP meeting, helping to take the anxiety out of the process.
- Establishes monthly morning or evening meetings (virtual or in-person) to give special education parents a safe space to network, share personal experiences, and reduce isolation.
- Collaborates with the district's Director of Public Relations to produce short, 2-to-3-minute video clips or infographics explaining common special education acronyms (e.g., Accommodations vs. Modifications, what is an LRE?) for the district website.
- Actively assists with parent engagement efforts surrounding the annual GaDOE Parent Survey.
- Inter-District Collaboration
- Partners with regional mentors and local agencies to host educational workshops.
- Serves on various committees such as Bulloch County Special Olympics Committee, Bulloch County Family Connection, and First District Transition Alliance.
