Ophthalmic Assistant – Dr. Allen – Statesville and Mooresville

Apply for the Ophthalmic Assistant role at Charlotte Eye Ear Nose & Throat Associates, P.A. (CEENTA). This is a non‑exempt position with core hours Monday–Friday, 8:00 am–5:00 pm, with possible variations based on clinic needs.

Primary Objective

The Ophthalmic Technician provides clinical and administrative support to the Provider to collaboratively ensure the delivery of high quality, compassionate care to CEENTA’s patients.

Essential Functions
  • Greet and room patients; obtain and document medical histories, chief complaint, HPI, vital signs, medications, and allergies in the EHR system.
  • Perform preliminary ophthalmic work‑up, including visual assessment, confrontational visual field testing, pupil assessment, tonometry, keratometry, ocular motility testing, glare testing, refractometry, pachymetry, lensometry, slit lamp examination, Ishihara testing, stereo testing, Amsler Grid, Schirmer testing.
  • Perform specialty testing (OCT, visual fields, topography, biometry, Pentacam).
  • Assist the Provider with patient examination, treatment, and in‑office procedures; prepare and administer medications; collect laboratory specimens; act as a scribe.
  • Explain treatment procedures and provide approved educational information; respond to patient questions and prescription refill requests via phone or EHR messaging.
  • Manage Provider schedule(s) in the EHR system, including appointments, procedures, and surgeries; maintain work queues.
  • Index lab reports and outside documentation to the EHR; perform clinical room turnover, set‑up, and equipment sterilization; maintain OSHA standards.
  • Maintain supplies; order from vendors; assist with training/onboarding of new staff and apprentices.
  • Meet the physical and mental demands of the position; work on‑site; provide predictable, reliable attendance.

Training Period

Corporate Epic training, 6–8 weeks of on‑the‑job training with current CEENTA staff and Operations Manager, plus check‑ins and audits to evaluate competency.

Accountability

Role supports CEENTA’s mission to provide comprehensive, quality, and ethical healthcare. The Certified Ophthalmic Technician directly impacts patient care delivery.

Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Graduate of an ICA‑accredited training program or IJCAHPO/AAO course preferred.
  • 1–2 years experience in an ophthalmology or optometry practice preferred.
Certificates, Licenses & Registrations
  • COA certification from IJCAHPO required for COA positions; COT certification required for COT positions.
  • Maintenance of certification and proof of certification is employee responsibility.
  • Current BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross preferred.
Work Environment

High patient volume multi‑specialty clinic; exposure to contagious diseases; PPE may be required; standard medical office and diagnostic equipment in use. Reasonable accommodations may be made.

Supervision

Reports to Operations Manager and Operations Supervisor, with clinical oversight from the Provider. No supervisory responsibilities.
