Job Duties- Provide interpreting services to blind and vision impaired individuals in a wide variety of settings, including meetings, training, interviews, medical, counseling, and virtual platforms.
- Interpret with high accuracy, using expressive and receptive skills and all communication modes.
- Facilitate communication between signing and non‑signing individuals, ensuring confidentiality and fidelity to the speaker’s content and spirit.
- Maintain professional conduct, avoiding personal opinions or counsel, and conduct self in a manner appropriate to the situation.
- Training in interpreting, completion of an interpreter training program or equivalent experience.
- Interpreting experience in both individual and group settings.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license.
- Knowledge of deaf culture, common communication issues, and structure/content of the English language.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language.
- Proven interpreting and translating skills, as determined by state quality assurance screening.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with individuals from varying social and economic environments.
- Independent planning, organization, and prioritization of work to accomplish team goals, while interpreting policies, analyzing complex information, maintaining confidentiality, and managing multiple responsibilities in a timely manner.
- Certificate of Transliteration or Interpretation through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or Quality Assurance Screening Level II or above through the VQAS testing system.
- Training in interpreting, completion of an interpreter training program or equivalent experience.
- Designation as a sensitive position under Va. Code § 2.2-1201.1.
- Fingerprint‑based criminal history check required of the finalist candidate.
