About the Role

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Fine & Performing Arts, the Academic Advisor provides specialized academic guidance to undergraduate students at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA) and in the General Humanities program by interpreting and applying institutional policies, assessing individual student needs, and developing tailored academic plans that support progression and success. The position exercises independent judgment to resolve complex and non-routine advising situations in consultation with academic leadership, including academic risk, exceptions, and program requirements, while ensuring accuracy and integrity in academic processes such as audits, transfer credits, and adjudication.

Through collaboration with faculty and campus partners, and participation in outreach, recruitment, and institutional initiatives, the Academic Advisor contributes to effective service delivery, informed decision-making, and continuous improvement of academic programs and student support systems.

The Academic Advisor will
  • Provide specialized academic advising to undergraduate students across diverse populations, integrating knowledge of academic regulations, program structures, and student development
  • Assess individual student needs and independently develop, recommend, and adjust academic plans, ensuring alignment with program, Faculty, and University requirements
  • Interpret and communicate complex policies, exercising judgment to resolve non-routine issues and support informed decision-making
  • Develop retention strategies and identify at-risk students through analysis of academic progress and determine appropriate interventions, referrals, and follow-up actions to improve outcomes
  • Analyze and coordinate academic processes such as degree audits, program adjudication, transfer credits, letters of permission, and exception requests
  • Evaluate complex or non-standard student situations, providing recommendations to academic leadership and supporting decision-making
  • Ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity of academic records and advising practices through detailed documentation and adherence to institutional policies and timelines
  • Monitor advising trends and student data, contributing insights and reports that inform operational decisions and continuous improvement
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, academic leaders, and campus partners to coordinate student support, exchange information, and resolve issues impacting student progression
  • Represent advising services through orientations, workshops, recruitment, and registration activities
  • Identify gaps or inefficiencies in curriculum, processes, or student supports, and recommend practical improvements
Key Skills and Experience
  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Understanding of undergraduate curriculum, course requirements, prerequisites, and scheduling within the Faculty
  • Knowledge of university policies, regulations, strategic priorities, programs, services, and systems
  • Familiarity with Faculty disciplines and academic programs within the Marilyn I. Walker School, and understanding of key administrative functions
  • Knowledge of privacy legislation (e.g., FIPPA) and proficiency with computer systems and software applications
  • Ability and willingness to learn and adapt to emerging technologies, including AI tools and platforms
  • Promotes and embodies inclusiveness and respect within the workplace and the broader community
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including active listening and clear written/verbal communication
  • Ability to coach, mentor, and motivate students, including identifying risk and making appropriate referrals
  • Demonstrates empathy, discretion, and professionalism when handling sensitive or confidential situation
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and multitasking skills, with accurate record-keeping practices
  • Effective problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt and apply new knowledge quickly
  • Ability to interpret and apply academic policies, regulations, and governance documents
  • Strong judgment in determining appropriate information sharing and referral pathways
  • Ability to audit and reconcile student records, identifying discrepancies in academic progression
Preferred or Asset Skills
  • Degree from within a relevant program preferred
  • Having experienced a non-linear path or challenging experience with academics
Salary and Total Rewards

Job Grade K, Salary Scale ($62,);
Target Hiring Range: $62,115-$70,000*
