Overview

Job Description Summary  The Technical Field Advisor (Stator/ Winding) is the on-site technical expert supporting the assembly and installation of hydroelectric stators. This role ensures that the mechanical and winding works are executed in accordance with the design, technical standards, quality requirements, and health and safety regulations.

Job Description  The Technical Field Advisor is responsible for preparing, directing and controlling the different phases of field operations for a project. This role is crucial to ensure that site works are completed safely, at the required quality standards, on time and within budget. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in construction sites management, strong leadership skills, and the ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently.

Primary Responsibilities

Ensure EHS compliance, evaluate tasks to assess hazards posing risks to workers, confirm controls are in place to prevent injuries and unplanned events. Stop work if risks are not sufficiently mitigated

Promote and uphold a strong safety culture; ensure all technical work complies with EHS requirements

Participate in risk assessments, method statements, and job safety analyses for high-risk activities (heavy lifts, confined spaces, hot work, working at heights, energized work)

Support implementation of environmental protection measures

Ensure compliance with applicable standards, permits, and regulatory obligations during construction and commissioning

Work closely with the Site Manager to plan and sequence stator construction activities

Provide input to construction schedules for stator and winding tasks and critical path activities

Provide day-to-day technical guidance and expertise to the on-site stator and winding teams

Lead and direct various labour teams in the planning and execution of daily activities

Closely monitor critical installation processes such as stator frame assembly, key bar installation, stator core piling, bar insertion, lashing, wedging, brazing, taping, etc.

Review and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, procedures, and manuals

Verify that construction and installation work complies with design, codes, standards, and OEM requirements

Participate in inspections and critical quality checks (stack height, circularity, concentricity, etc.)

Participate or perform stator testing such as core loop testing, hipots, meggers, blackout tests, etc.

Support resolution of technical non-conformances and punch list items

Provide input to construction schedules for technical tasks and critical path activities

Support constructability reviews and propose solutions to technical and logistical constraints

Coordinate with specialized subcontractors for key installation tasks

Review and validate test results

Support preparation of as-built documentation and O&M handover packages

Provide regular updates to project leadership on technical issues, risks, and progress

Act as site technical point of contact for design engineers, project managers, methods engineers, subcontractors and customer representatives

Participate in technical meetings, design clarifications, and change management discussions

Lead or contribute to root cause analysis for construction issues

Recommend technical solutions, field changes and design optimizations where appropriate

Capture lessons learned and improvement opportunities for future projects and standard practices

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical or a related technical discipline

Equivalent technical diploma with substantial hydro or power plant construction experience may be considered.

Minimum of 5 years of prior hydro electric generator experience, preferably in a supervisor capacity

Strong technical knowledge of the assembly of hydroelectric stators – frames, cores and winding

Minimum of 5-years in mechanical installation of shaft lines, turbines or generators

Excellent computer skills and MS office knowledge

Report any quality issues and non-conformities and ensure the site quality plan is respected at every step of the work

Ability to lead, motivate and empower staff

Perform skilled duties involving shaft line alignment, bearing settings, mechanical precision tools and measurements, setting on-site machining tools

Read and understand manuals, drawings, plans and specifications

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Work under pressure

Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in a field environment

Good communication and interpersonal skills for working with multi-disciplinary teams and contractors

Work with and direct unionized labor
