Position
Instrumentation and Controls Engineer – Port Colborne, Ontario.
Job Summary
Responsible for detailed engineering, commissioning, and long‑term operational support of instrumentation, automation and control systems for a new lithium battery separator manufacturing facility.
Commissioning & Project Phase Responsibilities
Support commissioning activities such as control, automation and safety systems being brought online, including loop checks, functional testing and system validation.
Ensure alignment with project requirements, applicable standards and commissioning needs.
Identify gaps, risks and constructability or operability concerns within automation and control systems and effectively communicate practical solutions.
Develop and / or review engineering deliverables such as control system architecture and functional block diagrams, communication network drawings, PLC panel layouts and wiring diagrams, instrument loop diagrams and junction box wiring, fire alarm system risers and layouts, instrument indices, I/O lists and cable schedules.
Assist with commissioning work plans, procedures and technical reports, written clearly and concisely.
Participate in site visits, inspections and field walkdowns to gather data and support construction and commissioning activities.
Transition To Maintenance & Operations Responsibilities
Provide ongoing technical support to Maintenance & Operations teams after plant handover.
Troubleshoot instrumentation, control systems and automation issues to minimize downtime and improve reliability.
Support preventive and predictive maintenance strategies for instruments, control panels, PLCs and safety systems.
Maintain and update control system documentation, drawings and asset data to reflect as‑built and operational changes.
Support management of change (MOC) activities related to control and instrumentation systems.
Collaborate with operations, maintenance and reliability teams to optimize control strategies, system performance and plant safety.
Support vendor interfaces for spare parts, upgrades, obsolescence management and technical support.
Key
Skills and Abilities
Experience working with PLC, DCS, SCADA and field instrumentation systems.
Familiarity with industrial standards and codes (ISA, IEC, NEC, NFPA, CSA, IEEE).
Strong ability to read, develop and review engineering drawings and technical documentation.
Experience coordinating with vendors, system integrators and multidisciplinary teams.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting and communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project deadlines in fast‑paced environments.
Proficiency in AutoCAD (standard or electrical) and MS Office products.
Qualifications
Education Background
Minimum post‑secondary education – bachelor’s degree in electrical, instrumentation, automation or related engineering discipline is preferred.
Knowledge & Experience
5+ years of hands‑on experience in instrumentation and controls field.
Hands‑on experience or strong exposure to commissioning and start‑up of industrial facilities is preferred.
Salary
Salary based position with a range of $ to $ based on education and experience.
Travel
Must hold a valid Passport and be willing to travel up to 10% internationally for training and visiting other company locations, predominately the United States of America and Japan.
Schedule
Full‑time 100% in‑person position.
Typical work hours Monday to Friday, with flexibility to address urgent issues as needed 24/7. Attendance at meetings and trainings on off shifts may also be required periodically with flexibility to adjust schedule to meet regular working hours as needed.
Working Environment
This position is based in a temporary structure on the site during the construction phase, with transition into the new facility in 2027. The final work environment will be a 24/7 manufacturing operation, supporting work around chemicals in a temperature and humidity…
