Position OverviewThe IT Technician (Tier
1) provides frontline technical support to faculty, staff, and students across the University of Niagara Falls Canada. The position is responsible for supporting day-to-day IT operations, including hardware and software troubleshooting, endpoint deployment and maintenance, Microsoft 365 support, user account assistance, network connectivity, printing, and IT asset management.
The role also provides technical support for classroom and audiovisual (AV) technologies, university offices and labs, and student residences, including onsite troubleshooting when required. The IT Technician supports employee onboarding and offboarding, responds to incidents and service requests through the IT service desk, and escalates complex technical or cybersecurity issues to senior IT personnel.
The position plays an important role in maintaining reliable, secure, and responsive IT services while delivering a high level of technical support and customer service to the university community.
Primary Purpose- Provide Tier 1 technical support to faculty, staff, and students in person, remotely, by phone, and through the IT service desk.
- Install, configure, deploy, troubleshoot, and maintain university laptops, desktops, printers, peripherals, and approved software across Windows and macOS environments.
- Support Microsoft 365, user accounts, passwords, MFA, SSO, email, and basic access-related issues, escalating privileged or complex requests as required.
- Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, printing, Wi‑Fi, wired network, and endpoint connectivity issues.
- Provide Classroom AV and technology support, including instructor workstations, displays, projectors, presentation systems, and other teaching technologies.
- Provide onsite IT support at student residences, including troubleshooting Wi‑Fi/network connectivity, university‑managed devices, and other supported technology.
- Support employee onboarding and offboarding, including device preparation, deployment, collection, account/access coordination, and equipment reassignment.
- Maintain accurate IT asset inventory and assist with device lifecycle management, hardware refreshes, repairs, and warranty/vendor coordination.
- Manage Tier 1 incidents and service requests through the ITSM/help desk system, maintaining appropriate documentation and escalating Tier 2/3 issues when required.
- Identify and elevate cybersecurity concerns, including phishing, malware, compromised accounts, and suspicious activity.
