About the Position

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Aquatics and Recreation Programs, the Senior Lifeguard ensures a safe, healthy, and engaging environment during all aquatic program offerings at City of Welland aquatic facilities. This role involves supervising staff, maintaining facility standards, and delivering excellent customer service.

Duties & Responsibilities

The duties listed are not meant to provide a description of each and every job performed but only those which represent the core functions of the job.

· Facilitate a variety of aquatic programs, services, and activities at three outdoor pools, the indoor therapy pool, and during events on the recreational canal.

· Supervise lifeguards and swim instructors, including scheduling, training, and providing daily support. Lead and manage teams across multiple facilities.

· Set up and prepare outdoor pools before the season begins, and ensure proper facility maintenance and cleanliness throughout, including buildings, equipment, and public bathrooms.

· Monitor and ensure the safety of patrons, evaluating situations quickly, making sound decisions, and responding effectively to safety concerns or emergencies. Administer first aid and follow City emergency and evacuation procedures when needed.

· Maintain adequate physical fitness to perform National Lifeguard skills and related tasks. Conduct regular water testing to uphold safety and quality standards.

· Perform daily opening and closing procedures, complete hourly checks, and maintain accurate records.

· Provide exceptional customer service, address patron concerns promptly, and ensure pool admissions positions are staffed during open swim sessions.

· Collaborate with Pool Operators and Senior Recreation and Culture Ambassadors to ensure smooth facility operations.

· Support recreational canal safety operations during special events.

· Report issues or concerns to the Supervisor of Aquatics and Recreation Programs.

· Perform other related administrative and operational duties as assigned.

What you need to Succeed...

Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C Certification.
Valid National Lifeguard Certification (Lifesaving Society).
Valid Swim for Life Instructor Certification (Lifesaving Society).
Valid High Five:
Principles of Healthy Childhood Development Certification.
Vulnerable Sector Police Check (as per the City’s Police Background Check procedure).
Aquatic Supervisor certification is considered an asset
Lifesaving Instructor certification is considered an asset
Standard First Aid Instructor certification is considered an asset.
National Lifeguard Instructor certification is considered an asset.
National Lifeguard – Waterfront certification is considered an asset.

Salary and Benefit Information

$23.07 - $24.96 (2026 Rate) Plus OMERS pension is available
