Senior Platform Engineer

Overview

We’re on a journey to transform how our engineers build and run services in the cloud. We’re looking for a Senior Platform Engineer to help lead the way by designing and evolving our internal developer platform, driving automation, scalability, and a world‑class engineering experience.

• Design and implement infrastructure as code, enabling consistent and repeatable environments across our cloud platform.
• Build and optimise cloud‑native deployment pipelines that support high‑frequency, low‑risk releases.
• Enhance our internal developer platform, improving how engineers provision infrastructure and deploy services.
• Troubleshoot complex platform and performance issues across distributed systems and lead root‑cause investigations.
• Contribute to architectural decisions across microservices, event‑driven systems, and cloud‑native patterns.
• Mentor other engineers and raise the engineering standard across the team.

We operate within a broader platform engineering function responsible for developer experience, Kubernetes, and platform support. The role sits in the team focused on our internal developer platform – the tooling engineers use to provision infrastructure, build pipelines, and deploy into our cloud environment.

We build platforms for engineers, not end‑users. Every decision is grounded in performance, reliability and usability at scale.

• Influence platform architecture across cloud, containers and automation.
• Build tools used across engineering teams, not just a single product.
• Work on complex distributed systems at real production scale.
• Introduce new capabilities, including practical AI‑driven enhancements to the developer experience.
• Contribute as a senior technical contributor without formal line management.

• Deep experience in platform engineering, site reliability or Dev Ops engineering.
• At least five years of hands‑on experience working in cloud environments.
• Strong experience building infrastructure as code using tools such as Terraform, Cloud Formation, or similar.
• Hands‑on experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins or Git Hub Actions).
• Strong experience with containers and orchestration, particularly Kubernetes.
• Experience designing and operating cloud‑native systems, including microservices and event‑driven architectures.
• Strong scripting or programming capability (e.g., Python, Go, Bash or Power Shell).
• Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, preferably with relevant certifications.
• Strong understanding of networking, security, APIs, databases and distributed systems.
• Clear ability to explain architecture decisions and systems built.
• Experience leading or influencing engineering practices and mentoring others.

• Grade 12 National Certificate / Vocational.

• Relevant degree in Information Technology.
• Certification in AWS Architecture.

• Clear criminal and credit record required.
• Role is based in Stellenbosch and may require relocation.
