Position Title

Machine Operator I – Grinding at Unisteel

Purpose

The Machine Operator I position is responsible for performing various tasks to set up and operate assigned machines; operates manual, semi‑automatic and automatic equipment according to established procedures and processes to accurately finish material (steel or aluminum stock) to customer specification; ensures quality via quality check post finish. Job complexity ranges from simple, highly repetitive tasks to repetitive but difficult tasks, congruent to incumbent’s experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Set up, adjust, and operate Blanchard‑style rotary surface grinders to grind flat surfaces.
  • Calibrate layout and centering of material per customer drawing/blueprint.
  • Load and unload material with forklift, magnets, chains, slings, or an overhead crane.
  • Complete paperwork and input information into the computer system, updating inventory.
  • Set controls for speed and feed rate; adjust machine speed during shaping, if needed.
  • Set up and operate manual and CNC machines, maintaining lubricant and coolant concentration.
  • Observe chip output characteristics to determine carbide replacement and make adjustments.
  • Inspect the quality of the material during and after the procedure.
  • Use measuring instruments, including tape, profilometers, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Check identification on all material handled by stamping or marking with necessary numbers.
  • Deliver material to the next area of operation as required.
  • Complete required production reports using the computer system.
  • Report defective material and faulty equipment immediately to the Operations Manager or Maintenance Department.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment and abide by all plant safety regulations and work rules; perform safety inspections on cranes, chains, slings, and magnets.
  • Perform in role of Saw/Flow Operator I, II, III as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions
  • Shop environment with moderate noise, fumes, odors, dust, and dirt.
  • Standing or walking; medium to heavy work, exerts up to 50+ lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally with assistance.
  • Exposed to moving objects with risk of electric shock and occasionally vibration.
  • Frequent fine manual dexterity and multilimb coordination including handling, pinching, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, turning, and bending.
  • Assigned duties according to specified procedures; work is checked frequently.
Qualifications
  • Working mechanical knowledge/aptitude applicable with experience specific to the essential functions of the position; additional training provided.
  • Ability to understand basic correspondence, instructions, rules, policies, graphs, charts, customer drawings and/or blueprints; ability to learn from written passages by discerning the main idea or key facts.
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic and use basic numerical concepts (whole numbers, percentages).
  • Vision includes acuity near and far, color, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Hearing ability to exchange information with co‑workers and management; faults/issues with material or equipment is detected.

Candidates will be required to submit to a criminal background investigation. Pre‑employment physical and drug screening will be required upon offer of employment.
