Description Of Job

This position provides entry-level marketable job skills to inmate students by delivering career and technical welding educational instruction and assessment within an adult educational correctional system/facility. Instruction is in accordance with the Colorado Community College System (CCCS) and/or the Colorado State Licensing Board (if applicable).

Job Duties Include
  • Teaches and mentors inmate students individually or in groups; promotes occupational, academic and transitional performance skills.
  • Determines educational needs of inmate students to develop short and long term goals.
  • Plans course content and develops methods of instruction.
  • Develops and implements competency-based teaching aids such as instructional software, multimedia visual aids, or study materials.
  • Provides hands-on training to teach and demonstrate skills, techniques, methods and procedures.
  • Lectures on welding theories, concepts, principles, and terminology.
  • Selects and administers assessments to measure progress and evaluate training effectiveness.
  • Ensures security, supervision and monitoring of inmate students and the storage/inventory of tools and materials in accordance with CDOC regulations.
  • Maintains tools and equipment in proper working condition.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records such as grades, attendance, and training activity details.
  • Observes and evaluates inmate students' work to provide feedback and improvement suggestions.
  • Documents vocational achievements, competencies and contact hours toward certification.
  • Participates in conferences, seminars, and training to stay current with developments in the field.
  • Promotes teamwork with fellow teachers and contributes to safety and security efforts.
  • Encourages critical thinking, self-discipline and motivation to help inmates reintegrate into society.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Safety & Security - This position maintains safety and security by training inmates and may perform inmate counts, searches, escorts, and movement control as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in welding or related field, and 4,000 hours of verified occupational experience in a welding field within the last seven years. There is no substitution for the 4,000 hours. Experience must be described in detail on the application. OR substitution options include:

  • SUBSTITUTION #1:
    Current license/certification in welding and 4,000 hours of experience.
  • SUBSTITUTION #2:
    Bachelor’s Degree in welding or related field with 2,000 hours of verified experience.

Note:

Paid and/or unpaid experience must be in the occupational field and not count teaching experience. There is no substitution for the 4,000 hours except as noted.

Conditions Of Employment
  • Must possess or obtain a CCCS post-secondary credential within six months of hire.
  • Must obtain a Colorado Community College Professional Teacher Credential within three years of hire and maintain it.
  • Attachment of college transcripts or license/certification as applicable to determine credits.
  • Employment history is calculated on a full-time basis; part-time experience is prorated.

Required Compentencies
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to communicate clearly in English.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience teaching or training in welding and with adults; ability to work under stress and manage conflicting situations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel; ability to create accessible documents.
  • Ability to travel and work rotating shifts; capacity to work in a correctional environment and follow safety protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in welding; experience mentoring in welding.
  • Commitment to ongoing program evaluation and industry engagement.
