Correctional Officer I - TEMPORARY AIDE - Facility Support - Sterling
The Correctional Officer I (CO I) temporary position maintains the safety and security of CDOC prison facilities and supports inmates for community reentry. This is a temporary aide vacancy at Sterling Correctional Facility.
OverviewLocation:
Sterling Correctional Facility, Sterling, CO. These are temporary positions with limited duration per Colorado constitution (no more than nine (9) months in a 12-month period).
- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility and monitor/controls access to facility and restricted areas.
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required).
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians/vehicles; operate security devices, alarms, and mechanical doors.
- Control inmate movement throughout daily schedule; escort and transport inmates in state vehicles.
- Monitor visiting areas; conduct formal, informal and emergency counts; maintain movement logs.
- Conduct searches for contraband (canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches).
- Inspect facility and cells for health, safety, and sanitation; inspect inmate mail and property.
- Respond to emergencies (fights, medical, fires, escapes) and follow safety protocols; document incidents using established reporting practices.
- Attend roll calls and communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors.
- Maintain tool and key control, proper storage and documentation; work 24/7 shifts as needed to maintain security.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify; no sponsorship for non-residents.
- Must be at least 18 years old; valid unrestricted Colorado driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- No felony convictions; able to pass a background investigation and health screening; able to complete Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training modules.
- Willingness to work all shifts, weekends and holidays; able to travel/transport inmates as needed; willing to be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper spray) and firearms training.
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks and work in a locked facility with varying conditions; able to learn and operate firearms, restraints, and security devices; capable of handling stressful and potentially violent situations.
- Strong work ethic, integrity, accountability, and dependability.
- Sound judgment and decision-making; effective interpersonal skills and teamwork.
- Excellent customer service, attention to detail, and clear English communication (written and spoken).
- Ability to observe and report accurately; knowledge of criminal justice concepts and departmental policies; basic computer skills.
- Ability to conduct searches, operate security equipment, and respond to emergencies promptly.
- Ability to remain alert, emotionally stable, and resilient under pressure; willingness to follow chain of command and safety protocols.
