Overview
CORRECTIONAL OFFICER I - Sterling Correctional Facility
Join to apply for the CORRECTIONAL OFFICER I - Sterling Correctional Facility role at Colorado Department of Revenue. This Colorado Department of Corrections posting will be used to fill vacant positions at Sterling Correctional Facility.
Responsibilities- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
- Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
- Man an armed post (this requires annual firearms certification);
- Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
- Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
- Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule;
- Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles;
- Monitor visiting areas;
- Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts;
- Cross check and maintain movement logs;
- Conduct searches for contraband (including canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches);
- Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards;
- Inspect inmate mail and property;
- Respond to emergencies (fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes) following established protocols;
- Follow tool and key control procedures and ensure proper storage and documentation;
- Attend roll call and document incidents using established reporting practices;
- Communicate pertinent information to coworkers and supervisors;
- Work additional hours and/or shifts as needed to maintain safety and security of 24/7 facilities.
- High School Diploma or a GED certificate.
- Applicants must acknowledge and agree to Conditions of Employment within the application process.
- Applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States; CDOC uses e-Verify and does not sponsor non-residents.
- Must be at least 18 years of age;
- Possess a valid and unrestricted driver’s license; maintain a safe driving record;
- Former State employees with disciplinary termination or resignation generally disqualify from current appointment; disclose as required.
- Complete a background investigation; provide disposition of charges if applicable.
- Health screening required to determine ability to perform essential functions;
- Complete Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training modules, including Defensive Tactics and other assessments;
- Physical ability to perform Defensive Tactics and related activities;
- Willingness to work various shifts, weekends, holidays, and travel as needed; TB screening required for new employees.
- Willingness to use physical force as trained, and to work in a locked facility under variable conditions;
- Comfort with working outdoors in inclement weather and operating in a controlled environment with security equipment.
- Must report to work during inclement weather as required.
- Strong work ethic, accountability, integrity and dependability;
- Sound judgment, reasoning and decision making;
- Interpersonal skills to cooperate with staff and inmates respectfully;
- Customer service orientation and attention to detail;
- Ability to read, comprehend and communicate in English (oral and written);
- Ability to observe and monitor inmate movements and activity;
- Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully;
- Knowledge of criminal justice systems, ADA, PREA, and department regulations;
- Computer proficiency for email and basic workflows;
- Ability to prepare accurate written reports and recount events;
- Ability to apply correctional methods to prepare inmates for community reentry;
- Ability to work with a diverse population and maintain composure in stressful situations;
- Ability to conduct searches and operate security equipment;
- Knowledge and use of firearms, restraints, and security devices as trained;
- Willingness to use chemical agents when appropriate and operate communications equipment;
- Ability to quickly respond to emergencies and to seize, hold and direct individuals as needed;
- Physical fitness to perform duties, including climbing stairs and standing for extended periods;
- Commitment to CDOC safety protocols and drug deterrence program requirements.
