Description
The Correctional Officer I - Temporary Aide - Facility Support at Sterling Correctional Facility (CDOC) is a temporary position to fill temporary aide vacant positions. The role supports safety and security of CDOC facilities and prepares inmates for community reentry.
Responsibilities- Work directly with inmates in a locked facility; monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas.
- Man an armed post (annual firearms certification required); monitor facility perimeter and detain unidentified pedestrians/vehicles.
- Operate mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms; control movement of inmates; escort and transport inmates in state vehicles.
- Monitor visiting areas; conduct counts; cross check and maintain movement logs.
- Conduct searches for contraband (can include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches).
- Inspect facility, cells and inmate mail/property; respond to emergencies (fights, medical, fires, escapes).
- Follow tool/key control procedures and attend roll call; document incidents using established reporting practices.
- Perform duties 24/7 operations as required and may include additional hours/shifts.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be legally eligible to work in the United States; able to pass background checks and health screening.
- Must be at least 18 years old; valid and unrestricted Colorado driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- No felony convictions; able to pass a background investigation and/or polygraph if required.
- Successfully complete CDOC Basic Training modules including Defensive Tactics and English comprehension.
- Ability to work in a locked facility, tolerate noise and temperature fluctuations, and travel/transport inmates as needed.
- Willingness to work all shifts, weekends, holidays and in inclement weather; able to use physical force as trained; willing to be exposed to OC spray during training and assignment.
- Strong work ethic, integrity, dependability and accountability.
- Sound judgment, teamwork and customer service orientation.
- Excellent English reading/writing and communication skills; ability to observe and report accurately.
- Knowledge of criminal justice concepts, CDOC policies, and ability to use basic computer tools.
- Ability to learn firearms, restraints and security devices; operate communications equipment; and conduct searches.
- Maintains alertness, emotional stability and resilience under pressure; adheres to safety and security protocols.
- Ability to remain within the CDOC mission and work with diverse populations.
