The primary duties of this position are located within 30 miles of the state border; therefore, this position is exempt from the residency requirements. Applications will be considered from residents and non-residents of Colorado.

This recruitment is for the Sterling Correctional Facility. This posting may be used to fill future vacancies at this location.

This Correctional Support Licensed Trades Supervisor I (CSLTS I) is an HVAC Supervisor for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) at the Sterling Correctional Facility. Primary responsibilities include: ensuring the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates; ensuring safe, efficient and compliant HVAC system operations; and ensuring effective training and supervision of assigned inmate work crew. This position prepares inmates for community reentry by promoting the CDOC Mission and Vision while adhering to a high level of integrity and commitment.

Operations, Supervision and Inmate Supervision

Safety and Security: maintain facility and work site safety and security; train and guide inmates in the proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment and chemicals; enforce security procedures; monitor environment and inmate behavior; initiate verbal reprimands as warranted; supervise inmates with appropriate use of restraints or force; conduct inmate counts and transportation; respond to emergencies per agency policy; promote a safe and secure environment.

Operations: perform hands-on instructional work with inmate crews; design, install, diagnose, repair and maintain HVAC and refrigeration equipment; oversee DDC and HVAC control systems; coordinate with other trades; document work; support other maintenance areas as needed; ensure compliance with regulations and testing standards for airflow, lighting and sound.

Supervision: provide work lead duties for inmate workers; train inmates in tools, safety, and procedures; emphasize PPE and professional conduct; promote a high level of performance aligned with agency values.

Inmate Supervision: participate in interview/hiring for work crews; train inmates in HVAC operations; monitor progress and evaluate inmate performance; manage hours and pay; resolve grievances; support community re-entry goals.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • License: EPA 608 Certification (Type I, II, III or Universal). Attach certificate copies to the application.
  • Experience: Four (4) years in light building construction and/or preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance in residential or commercial facilities using multiple trades (carpentry, plumbing, electrical). At least one year must include HVAC and refrigeration system work.
  • Substitutions: Apprenticeship or formal degree may substitute on a year-for-year basis. Transcripts may be required.
