PURPOSE:

** The cash handling and reconciliation specialist is responsible for receiving and processing all payments—whether made in-person or remotely, such as by mail, online, or via 835 files—on a daily basis. This staff member is expected to accurately post payments and adjustments, monitor trends, and compile balancing reports among other duties. The cash handling and reconciliation specialist’s activities support the overall financial health of the organization by ensuring payments are applied to outstanding balances in a timely manner and by identifying variances for further follow-up.

* ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

*** Receives and processes all types of patient payments and non-patient payments for CGH Medical Center by properly documenting and entering transactions into the appropriate system, posts payments promptly.
* Ensures appropriate amounts are allocated and posted to individual patient accounts and that balancing procedures are maintained for the posting of payment and adjustment batches.
* Responsible to work assigned work queues, reports, and spreadsheets to resolve errors or exceptions. May be responsible to download reports or files from secured websites for processing.
* Prepares, posts, and processes payment batches; posts denials, contractual adjustments, and guarantor payments within payment batches; and ensures all payment batches are balanced.
* Investigates the source of unidentified payments, recoupments, and interest payments to ensure they are applied to appropriate accounts.
* Reports over payments or refunds as necessary when identified during the payment posting process. Brings payment discrepancies to the attention of the department manager.
* Prepares individual bank deposits accurately and in a timely manner. Reconciles cash receipts and patient accounts. Balances cash drawer daily.
* Works closely with Accounting to investigate and resolve any out-of-balance conditions between the deposit and postings.  
** SPECIALIZED KNOW-HOW & REQUIREMENTS:
*** High School diploma required.
* Associate degree in finance, business administration, healthcare administration, or a related discipline preferred.
* General understanding of computers and strong data-entry skills. General math skills/proficient in 10-key calculator.
* Experience with computer and business software programs (Excel) required.
* At least two years of experience in clerical, customer service, or medical billing office preferred
* Knowledge of Insurance and/or Managed Care preferred.
** Compensation Range**$16.00 - $24.00
