Job SummaryThe Field Engineering Manager (FEM) oversees and supports a team of Field Engineers responsible for surveying, data collection, as-built documentation, and quality verification on active utility construction projects. This role ensures consistency, accuracy, and efficiency across all field engineering activities while mentoring team members in technical execution, problem‑solving, and coordination.
The FEM works closely with project managers, superintendents, and field engineers to ensure all field engineering functions align with project goals, standards, and schedules. This position requires strong leadership skills, technical expertise in survey and utility construction practices, and the ability to manage multiple priorities across several active job sites.
- Lead, mentor, and develop Field Engineers to ensure consistent performance, technical accuracy, and professional growth.
- Conduct training on surveying methods, CAD workflows, documentation practices, and QA/QC standards.
- Allocate Field Engineer resources across multiple projects to ensure proper coverage and workload balance.
- Review Field Engineer deliverables, including as-builts, production tracking, surveys, redlines, and daily reports, for accuracy and completeness.
- Establish and maintain standardized procedures for field documentation, data collection, and reporting.
- Provide technical guidance on GPS/total station setup, survey control, CAD workflows, and utility verification techniques.
- Validate survey data, field measurements, and as-built drawings prior to internal or client submission.
- Collaborate with project managers and superintendents to resolve constructability issues, alignment discrepancies, and layout conflicts.
- Conduct periodic field audits to verify accuracy of installed utilities and ensure documentation meets Benchmark and client standards.
- Oversee QA/QC procedures tied to field engineering deliverables and support corrective actions when deficiencies are identified.
- Track team productivity, production reporting, and alignment with project schedules.
- Maintain consistent communication with project leadership regarding field progress, issues, and resource needs.
- Support project startup and closeout by ensuring complete, accurate, and timely submission of survey data and as-built documentation.
- Participate in hiring, onboarding, evaluating, and developing Field Engineers.
- Promote and enforce Benchmark’s safety standards and OSHA compliance within the field engineering team.
- Utilize construction management software (such as Procore or Field Wire) to support field documentation and coordination.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Surveying, or related field — or equivalent field experience.
- 4–6+ years of experience in field engineering, utility construction, or surveying, with at least 2 years in a leadership or mentorship role.
- Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GPS, total station, and related survey/data collection equipment.
- Strong communication, coordination, and organizational skills.
- Proven ability to lead and mentor technical field staff while managing multiple priorities.
- Strong understanding of underground utility construction methods, as-built requirements, and QA/QC processes.
