Position: Electrician - Helper 1 at Black & Veatch Family of Companies Sterling, VA

Job Summary

Assist journeyman in the planning, lay-out, installation, testing and repair of wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, motors, equipment and control systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Learn to use appropriate hand and power tools to properly assist electrician in performing duties, including measuring, cutting, and bending wire and conduit; drill holes for wiring; pull wiring through openings; assist in lifting, positioning, and fastening objects such as wiring, conduit, and motors.
  • Perform minor repairs, such as replacing fuses, light sockets, bulbs, and switches.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and keep supplies and parts in order; disassemble, repair and reassemble defective electrical equipment, such as motors.
  • Load, transport, unload, and furnish electrician with materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Clean work area and restock supplies and materials as necessary; help install all other related items in accordance with the applicable plans and specifications; perform other routine duties as directed by experienced craft worker.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes and programs as requested; engage with your work team to ensure zero injuries; understand that no job is so important that your safety and that of your crew will be compromised.
  • Watch for hazards and report any concerns to your supervisor or safety professional; use stop-work authority if needed until the issue is resolved.
  • Report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process as needed.
  • Participate in all pre-job work planning and safety discussions; identify safety hazards and take corrective action to eliminate and/or mitigate hazards.
  • Understand and respond to safety hazards and warning devices; follow lockout/tag out procedures.
  • Attend site-specific training and assure you follow all procedures as outlined in training; follow established safety rules and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use effective verbal and written communication; perform basic arithmetic as required; listen to co-workers and provide feedback.
  • Coordinate work with other crafts and co-workers; actively participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities; produce quality work meeting plans, specifications and industry standards.
  • Learn to read and understand plans and specifications, including one-line diagrams, cable and conduit schedules, ladder diagrams, P& s, and loop diagrams.
  • Assist journeyman in planning, lay-out, diagram, install and/or repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment in accordance with plans and specifications; learn to perform layout independently.
  • Observe functioning of installed equipment or systems to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement; notify supervision of hazards and utilize safety stop-work authority as needed.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions and identify problems, inaccuracies, and cost-saving measures; take corrective actions as needed and report issues to supervision.
  • If certified to operate equipment, ensure construction equipment is correctly operated and maintained; complete Daily Equipment Inspections for equipment used.
  • Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.
Preferred Qualifications

NCCER Construction Craft Laborer; NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program

Minimum Qualifications

Experience working as an electrician or similar craft as a helper or laborer, and a basic knowledge of the electrical craft. Developing knowledge in the installation or maintenance of electrical wiring, conduit, systems, equipment and fixtures; testing electrical systems with appropriate tools; should be familiar with the National Electrical Code (NEC). If applicable must have all necessary licenses for the jurisdiction in which the work is to be performed.

Ability to understand and follow directions. In addition, must have all necessary tools (see Electrician helper tool list). Must be at least 18 years of age. All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
